Hanni and Nanni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hanni und Nanni (original title: St. Clare’s ) is one of the most successful book series by the English children's and youth author Enid Blyton (1897–1968). It is counted as trivial literature and served as a template for a German radio play of the same name - and a Japanese anime series of the same name as well as for the German films Hanni & Nanni , Hanni & Nanni 2 , Hanni & Nanni 3 and Hanni & Nanni - Mehr als Beste Freunde .

action

Hanna "Hanni" Sullivan and Marianne "Nanni" Sullivan (English: Patricia "Pat" O'Sullivan and Isabel O'Sullivan , in film adaptations Annemarie instead of Marianne ) are twins and have been living in the private, six-grade girls' boarding school Lindenhof since they were twelve (English: St. Clare ). Nanni is of a calm nature and the more sensible one, Hanni, on the other hand, is wild, at ease and can never sit still. Together with their classmates and the boarding staff, they experience many turbulent adventures .

Characteristic of the Hanni and Nanni books is the typical boarding school atmosphere with many permanent characters , but also numerous "newcomers". Despite constant rivalries and problems, everything always ends well in the end.

Original English version

The original book series is called St. Clare’s and comprises six volumes that were first published in the United Kingdom from 1941 to 1945 by Methuen Verlag. The plot ends with the completion of fifth form, the penultimate grade before graduation in England.

German version

Differences to the original version

The German version differs significantly from the original English volumes, for example the names of persons and places have been Germanized. Also that Enid Blyton settled the boarding school stories in Cornwall and that St. Clare's is laid out as a strictly Anglican institution is no longer apparent from the translation: The description of everyday life in a typical English boarding school of the 1940s became the atmosphere of a German boarding school 1960s.

In order to make the time shift plausible, equipment, technology and culture were modernized: a gramophone in the common room became a record player , the girls no longer listen to jazz but rather hits , instead of having to go to the post office , they can make calls in telephone booths , etc.

The sporting activities have also been adapted to suit each country: Lacrosse , a ball sport popular with girls in England in the first half of the 20th century , became handball in German , and there is hardly anything left to be found in the translation about other typically English leisure activities .

In the editions of the Schneider-Verlag parts of chapters or even whole chapters are missing. Already the first chapter of the first volume "The Twins At St. Clare's" was partially rewritten for the German version "Hanni and Nanni are always against": While Pat and Isabel, for example, have problems with the gray school uniform prescribed for them in St. Clare's seems too gloomy and too colorless, there is no such conversation between Hanni and Nanni.

Sequels

Of St. Clare who published Franz Schneider Verlag in 1965 on German total 27 volumes, various anthologies and special editions. However, only six volumes that were translated by Christa Kupfer correspond to the respective volumes of the original St. Clare's series , so that in the German version, following the original volumes 1–4, a completely new storyline arises after the 2nd grade. Volumes 11 and 13 are the German translations of the last two original volumes.

The title of the remaining German volumes is still about Hanni and Nanni , but they are German-language commissioned works by Franz Schneider Verlag , and the stories and the main characters no longer have much in common with the original characters apart from their names. The later volumes no longer deal with the boarding school and its typical atmosphere .

Since March 2010, Franz Schneider Verlag has been publishing a second series parallel to the 27-volume series. This consists of special volumes which, compared to the original series, are characterized by a larger number of pages and a higher price. The reasons for the difference in terms of content remain unclear. The imprint of these volumes does not provide any information about this. The publisher's website does not comment on this either.

German commissioned work from the 1970s

In the course of the 1970s, volumes 5 to 15 appeared in the Schneider Verlag edition, which represent the continuation of boarding school life from grades 3 to 6 and are narrative arranged in the correct chronology:

  • Volume 5: Hanni and Nanni don't give up
  • Volume 6: Hanni and Nanni in the ghost castle
  • Volume 7: Hanni and Nanni are looking for ghosts
  • Volume 8: Hanni and Nanni in a thousand distress
  • Volume 9: Hanni and Nanni in great shape
  • Volume 10: Hanni and Nanni have a party
  • Volume 12: Hanni and Nanni and their guests
  • Volume 14: Hanni and Nanni found a club
  • Volume 15: Hanni and Nanni in the country school home

Volumes 11 and 13 are translations of the English originals Claudine at St. Clare’s and Fifth Formers at St. Clare’s, respectively .

German commissioned work from the 1980s

Boarding school life came to an end after volume 15 , and the twins and their friends grew up (in the first chapter “Farewell to Lindenhof” in volume 15, the eighteen-year-old girls are already discussing the jobs they want to take up in a few weeks after leaving school). Nevertheless, at the end of the 1980s there was a continuation of the narrative actually completed series, which was set back in the twins' school days:

  • Volume 16: Hanni and Nanni get everyone going
  • Volume 17: Hanni and Nanni are great
  • Volume 18: Best Friends
  • Volume 19: Hanni and Nanni save the horses
  • Volume 20: Good times with Hanni and Nanni
  • Volume 21: Hanni and Nanni make it big
  • Volume 22: Dangerous game for Hanni and Nanni
  • Volume 23: Lindenhof in danger
  • Volume 24: The riddle of the new one
  • Volume 25: The Runaway
  • Volume 26: The circus adventure
  • Volume 27: School trip into adventure

Volumes 16-19 and 22 were written by German authors.

Volumes 20 and 21 were written by the author Pamela Cox and also translated. You should fill in the gaps in the original volumes, since the 3rd and 6th grades are not described there. They are originally called Third Form at St. Clare’s and Sixth Form at St. Clare’s . There is a third volume of her with the title Kitty at St Clare’s , which has not yet been translated.

With volume 23, the series was continued in 2007 by another author. In the imprint, under the somewhat misleading note “German text:” you can find the name “ Brigitte Endres ”, a German author for children and young people who also has her own series of books for girls at Schneiderbuch. Lindenhof in Danger ties in with the characters and spirit of the original volumes. The girls go to high school; but it is never explicitly stated in which class. The events take place at some point during the school year and therefore do not begin and end in a chronology, which facilitates a potential continuation.

New editions

The first editions by Schneider-Verlag from the 1960s and 1970s have become coveted collector's items.

At the end of the 1980s, Schneider-Verlag published a new edition of volumes 1 to 15 with a modernized text (for example, “Fräulein Theobald” became “Frau Theobald”) and contemporary illustrations ; for example, the figures in the new pictures by the illustrator Nikolaus Moras did not have any Bell bottoms and no more blouses with puff sleeves.

In August 2005 the Schneider-Verlag (now Egmont Schneider-Verlag) published another, modernized version of all 22 volumes published to date. Illustrations and the title layout (again by Nikolaus Moras) were again adapted to the zeitgeist. The spelling of the text follows the new rules.

Redesign 2015

For the 50th anniversary, the illustrations and the title layout of all volumes were adapted again. The eight special volumes were republished as volumes 28 to 35. In addition, outdated terms have been replaced by more modern ones.

Since then, new books have appeared:

  • Volume 36: Hanni and Nanni celebrate their birthday
  • Volume 37: Hanni and Nanni in New York
  • Volume 38: Hanni and Nanni and the pony twins
  • Volume 39: Hanni and Nanni Christmas in the snow
