Hanns-Albert Steger

Hanns-Albert Steger (born March 30, 1923 in Brunndöbra ; † August 21, 2015 in Erlangen ) was a full professor at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (chair for foreign studies, Romansh-speaking cultures with a focus on economic and social order).

Hanns-Albert Steger was one of the leading Latin American experts in German-speaking countries. His main thematic focuses were the sociology of culture , education and religion as well as historical cultural anthropology , while the regional focus was on Mexico , Colombia , Venezuela and the Caribbean . Steger was a co-founder of the ADLAF ( Working Group on German Latin American Research ) and the Consejo Europeo de Investigaciones Sociales de América Latina (CEISAL) , of which he was president for many years.

Hanns-Albert Steger studied Hispanic Studies and Sociology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg , in Heidelberg , Aix-en-Provence , Tübingen and Madrid , and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1954 under Gerhard Hess . He was an employee and secretary at the German Academic Exchange Service in Bonn , the German Student Union and the West German Rectors' Conference . In 1965 he qualified as a department head of the Dortmund Social Research Center at the University of Münster with Helmut Schelsky in Münster .

After several years in Latin America , he taught in Münster, London , Osnabrück , Mexico City and Bielefeld and was visiting professor at the UNAM and in Strasbourg . In 1974 he was appointed to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences in 1987/88.

Hanns-Albert Steger was closely associated with the Austrian Latin America Institute in Vienna and bequeathed a collection of more than 1,000 monographs and 100 journals to it in 1996. Thanks to funding from the anniversary fund of the Austrian National Bank , the Steger Collection was cataloged and made accessible to the public.
