Hanns Reich

Hanns Heinz Erich Reich (born April 2, 1916 in Munich ; † October 8, 2010 in Icking ) was a German photographer and publisher and honorary consul for the Republic of Malawi .

Life

On broadcast on the youth radio of the Bavarian Radio, 1932

Hanns Reich was born on April 2, 1916 in Munich. Because his preferences for technology and creativity became apparent at an early age, his parents gave him a camera that did not yet contain films, but glass plates (6.5 × 9 cm). For development, he used the bathroom as a darkroom and converted a margarine bucket into an enlarger. In 1932, at the age of 16, he gave lectures on photo technology and technical handicrafts on the youth radio of the Bavarian Radio .

After studying electrical engineering , he worked as a development engineer at Rohde & Schwarz and, after the war, founded Hanns Reich Verlag (license from the US occupying power US-E-120), which began publishing the magazine radiowelt . There was not only the radio program to read, but also tips for technically interested radio hobbyists. From 1947 onwards, 26 opera text books were published in the text library of the radio world . A series of specialist books on aviation technology and the monthly magazine Das Elektron in Wissenschaft und Technik followed.

In 1952 he made a six-month journey through South Africa, which was still untouched by tourism . Fascinated, he captured his impressions with the camera. After his return, these recordings resulted in the first volume South Africa (1954) in the terra magica series . For the books in this series, he combined photos by world-famous (e.g. Henri Cartier-Bresson ) and completely unknown photographers with his own photos.

Children's photo books such as Mein Esel Benjamin , a knowledge series for children ( ask children ) and photo calendars completed the range.

On April 10, 1981, Hanns Reich was granted the exequatur as honorary consul of the Republic of Malawi in Munich with the consular district Free State of Bavaria and the State of Baden-Württemberg , an office he held until he was 92.

He was married to Mathilde Runte and had four children. Hanns Reich died on October 8, 2010 at the age of 94 in Icking, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district.
