Hans-Martin Gauger (born June 19, 1935 in Freudenstadt ) is a German Romance scholar , linguist and author .

life and work

Hans-Martin Gauger grew up in Saulgau in the French occupation zone . With a French scholarship, he attended the Collège Decourdemanche in Tübingen and then the Collège Pierre Brossolette in Constance . In 1954 he graduated from a German school in Biberach . Gauger studied Romance studies , German and English and philosophy in Tübingen, Leicester , Santander and Paris . Gauger received his doctorate in 1960 and passed his state examination in French and English in 1962 . Teachers included Walter Schulz and Mario Wandruszka . In 1968 he completed his habilitation and in 1969 was appointed university professor at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg . From 1971 to 1974 he was deputy rector ( prorector ) in Freiburg. In 1981/82 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. In 2000, Gauger resigned as a professor at the Albert Ludwig University.

Hans-Martin Gauger's research focuses on Romance philology, language theory and philosophical linguistics; It is particularly important to him to work on the path between literature and linguistics, and it is important to him to make his theses accessible to a broader, including non-academic, public - an achievement for which he was awarded the German Language Prize in 1984. His work is u. a. shaped by the friendship with the historian Golo Mann as well as the friendships and acquaintances with writers such as Martin Walser , Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt , Elazar Benyoëtz . During his studies he joined the Normannia Tübingen association . Since 1982 he has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt and was its vice-president from 1984 to 1989. 1996–98 he was tower clerk for the city of Deidesheim . In 1994 he received the Bavarian Literature Prize (Karl Vossler Prize) for scientific representations of literary rank.

He is also a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and since 2010 a member of the literature section of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts . Hans-Martin Gauger is a literary critic for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and a member of committees for renowned literary prizes.

Gauger has been a member of the citizens' initiative Pro Cultural Capital Freiburg since 2011 .
