Hans Karl Georg von Kaltenborn-Stachau (born March 23, 1836 in Magdeburg , † February 16, 1898 in Braunschweig ) was a Prussian infantry general and minister of war .

Life

origin

Hans came from the noble family Kaltenborn-Stachau . He was the son of Friedrich von Kaltenborn-Stachau (1803-1867) and his wife Karoline Henriette, née Voigtel (born November 21, 1810, † April 1, 1836 in Magdeburg). His uncle Georg von Kaltenborn-Stachau (1805-1875) was Kurhessischer major general and minister of war.

Military career

Kaltenborn attended the seminary school and the cathedral high school in his hometown. From May 2, 1848, he was then a cadet in Bensberg and later in Berlin . From there he was transferred to the 27th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 29, 1854 as a second lieutenant . Between 1857 and 1860 he attended the General War School and was assigned to the topographical department of the General Staff for three years in 1861 .

During the war against Denmark he was a member of the railway commission in Altona and attended the transition to Alsen . In December 1864 he was appointed General Staff of the VI. Army Corps transferred. Promoted to captain the following year , he took part in the war against Austria in 1866 and was appointed company commander in the 5th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 94 (Grand Duke of Saxony) in 1868. In 1869 he was employed as a general staff officer in the VII Army Corps .

As a major , Kaltenborn-Stachau took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . In 1874 he became commander of the 1st battalion in the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian) No. 2 and as such on January 18, 1875 a lieutenant colonel and finally on April 18, 1878 a colonel . After initially commanding the 5th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 53 , he took over the Kaiser Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 on September 20, 1881 and in 1884 became Chief of the General Staff of the Guard Corps and Major General . In November 1885 he was appointed commander of the 2nd Guard Infantry Brigade and in January 1888 entrusted with the leadership of the 3rd Division . On July 7 of the same year he was given command of the 2nd Guards Division and was promoted to lieutenant general at the same time .

He was appointed Minister of War to succeed Julius von Verdy du Vernois on October 4, 1890. Under his leadership, the Army Bill was put into effect in 1893, after which the army was expanded by 70,000 men and the service period was extended to two years. Kaltenborn-Stachau resigned from his office on October 12, 1893.

Kaltenborn married on March 1, 1875 in Stettin in Helene Quoss (1852-1930). The following children were born from the marriage:
