biography

"Barbara" (1967) by Hans Neubert. Portrait of the actress Barbara Neubert, née Simon

Hans Neubert already dealt at a young age autodidact with visual arts and sat down during extended visits to the Dresden Gemäldegalerie intensively with the works of old masters such as Titian , Rubens and Rembrandt apart. In 1941/1942 he studied - after an apprenticeship in lithography in the company Meinhold & Sons - briefly with Ernst Richard Dietze (1880–1961) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. He was called up in 1942 and was taken prisoner during the Second World War , some of which he had to spend in former concentration camps . He recorded encounters from these years, which took the artist to Norway , Poland , Russia and Slovakia , in several sketchbooks.

"The little big Cormak" (1978) by Hans Neubert

After the war and imprisonment, Neubert resumed his studies at the Dresden Art Academy from 1947 to 1949. Reinhold Langner (1905–1957) and Max Erich Nicola (1889–1958) were among his teachers . Without a degree, Neubert went into business as a painter and graphic artist in Dresden. For example, 10 murals were created for the Friedrich Loeffler Institute on Riems Island, which deal artistically with the subject of virology in a unique way . Furthermore, Neubert illustrated several books during this time, of which the Africa volume Where the Rhinos wallow was recognized as one of the most beautiful books of 1959. In 1958 he went on a study trip to Switzerland , where, among other things, a portrait of the writer Hermann Hesse was created. Other portraits from these years show the conductor Kurt Masur and the pianists Arthur Rubinstein and Wladimir Horowitz ; these works, but also the portraits of the singers Elvis Presley , Billie Holiday and Michael Jackson, bear witness to Neubert's pronounced passion for the world of music .

"Ernst Bloch" (1977) by Hans Neubert

In 1961, shortly after his marriage to actress Barbara Simon, Hans Neubert moved to West Berlin . From there he went on further study trips to France and Spain . Since 1969 he lived and worked in the small Bavarian village of Pähl near the Ammersee.

"Setting Sun" (1992) by Hans Neubert
"Eberschädel, Plastik und Uhr" (1959) by Hans Neubert

Neubert was a loner who refused all his life to artistic or political dictates, trends and fashions. Nevertheless, there were formative role models for him; Not only the old masters, whom he studied in Dresden, were pioneering, but also contemporary artists such as Max Beckmann , Pablo Picasso and Oskar Kokoschka .
