Harry von Arnim (General)

Harry Bernd von Arnim (born March 26, 1890 in Criewen ; † October 26, 1941 near Naro-Fominsk , Soviet Union ) was a German major general in the Wehrmacht in World War II .

Life

origin

He came from a Brandenburg noble family von Arnim and was the son of the later Prussian Minister of Agriculture Bernd von Arnim and his wife Margarete Freiin von Arnim (1859-1940).

Military career

Arnim came in the spring of 1912 as an ensign in the 1st Guards Uhlans of the Prussian army and was there on August 18, 1913 Patent of 19 August 1911. Lieutenant promoted. During the First World War he was deployed with the regiment on the Western Front and acted as a mounted, platoon and squadron leader. On October 5, 1916 promoted to first lieutenant and temporarily acted as a company commander in a guard infantry regiment. In the same function, he was transferred to the 15th (Prussian) cavalry regiment in Neuhaus / Westphalia on June 1, 1930 . With effect from October 1, 1935, he was appointed department commander in Reiter Regiment 13 and on April 1, 1936 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . A year later, on October 1, 1936, von Arnim became the commander of the tournament and racing department of the Hanover cavalry school . On October 1, 1938 he took up his service with the staff of the Higher Cavalry Officer 4 ( Philipp Kleffel ) in Hanover, but was entrusted with a new task only a few months later. As a colonel , Arnim was appointed commander of the military district riding and driving school in Warendorf on April 1, 1939 .

Arnim kept this post through the beginning of World War II until the end of May 1940. On May 30, 1940, he was appointed commander of the 479 Infantry Regiment of the 258th Infantry Division , with which he participated in the Eastern campaign from June 1941 . There he fell on October 26, 1941 near Naroforminsk. Posthumously Arnim was promoted to major general on March 1, 1943 with seniority from October 1, 1941.
