The Heidelberg Army Heliport ( AHP ), previously Heidelberg Army Airfield , is a former military airfield of the US Army in the Heidelberg district of Kirchheim , which was used as a heliport . In the course of the conversion of the US Army locations in Schwetzingen , Heidelberg and Mannheim by 2015, the heliport was handed over to the Federal Agency for Real Estate on April 30, 2014 . Part of the area was used by the agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere.
use
As part of the relocation of the USAREUR - headquarters to Wiesbaden , the airfield was closed in 2013. A further use of the military airfield as a civil airfield was unlikely due to the dangerous and difficult approach from the east and the relatively short runway. In addition, the district road 9706 crosses the eastern part of the runway 08/26. In addition, some of the residents of the neighboring Heidelberg district of Pfaffengrund have already complained about aircraft noise in the past. Since it was converted into a heliport, the airfield has only been used in the context of emergency medical aid or public safety measures, as well as for operations to support the surrounding US Army facilities.
In October 2014 it became known that the area of the former airfield will be rented temporarily from November 2014 to May 2016 by the world market leading agricultural technology manufacturer John Deere . John Deere operates plants in nearby Mannheim and Bruchsal and uses the airfield for product presentations under practical conditions and training for sales partners .
On July 20 and 21, 2018, a fire service fair took place on the premises.
Units and facilities
In the end, the head of the USAREUR / 7A Army Aviation Department was responsible for managing the heliport . Originally the 207th Aviation Regiment was stationed in Heidelberg, but it was renamed the 214th Aviation Company before it was again connected to the 12th Combat Army Aviation Brigade in 2006.
The facility covers an area of 15.6 (according to other information 16.8) hectares, of which, without the landing area, 1.8 hectares are built over. There are a total of 14 buildings: the tower , eight halls and five other one or two-story buildings.
