Henry Armstrong , actually Henry Melody Jackson Jr. (born December 12, 1912 in Columbus , Mississippi , † October 23, 1988 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American boxing athlete.

Armstrong was the eleventh of fifteen children, a mulatto ; his father, Henry Sr., was a black man with Indian and Irish blood. His mother America was Half-Indian ( Cherokee ).

He lost his professional debut under the name Melody Jackson in 1931 by knockout because he had practically not eaten because of the depression period. He let himself be reamateurised for a short time, then finally turned professional under the name "Henry Armstrong". He lost some of his early fights now, but only on points.

In 1937 alone, the classic Pressure Fighter boxed 27 times, won all fights, 26 of them by knockout. On October 29, 1937, he won the world featherweight title by knocking out in the sixth round over Petey Sarron. In 1938 he also won the welterweight title against Barney Ross and the lightweight title against Lou Ambers .

He boxed largely in welterweight , but weighed in as a lightweight. The Ring Magazine called Armstrong as the best welterweight of all time.

His defeat in the 1940 middleweight title fight against Ceferino Garcia, whom he had already beaten in the welterweight division, is considered a misjudgment.

In 1940 he lost his world title to Fritzie Zivic , who even beat him prematurely in the rematch, the only knockout defeat of his career after the one in his professional debut. Although he defeated Zivic again in a non-title fight in 1942, his performance began to decline. When he was defeated by the new welterweight star Sugar Ray Robinson in 1943, he was long gone. Armstrong ended his career in 1945.

In 1990 Armstrong was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
