Hermann Fehling (doctor)
Hermann Fehling (born July 14, 1847 in Stuttgart , † November 11, 1925 in Baden-Baden ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician as well as a university professor .

Hermann Fehling was born as the son of the chemist Hermann Christian von Fehling , professor at the Technical University in Stuttgart. After attending grammar school in Stuttgart, Fehling first studied natural sciences at the Technical University , then medicine at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and the University of Leipzig .
He took part in the Franco-German War and was awarded the Württemberg Medal of Merit. In 1872 he joined the Leipzig University Women's Clinic as an assistant doctor. There doctorate he became Dr. med. Study trips took him to Vienna , Prague , London , Glasgow and Edinburgh . In 1876 he completed his habilitation in Leipzig.
In 1877 he was appointed lecturer at the Württemberg State Midwifery School in Stuttgart. In the same year he took over the management of the school. In 1883, Fehling received a teaching post at the University of Tübingen. In 1887 he accepted the chair for obstetrics at the University of Basel . As director of the women's hospital, he designed a new building, which at the time was considered one of the most modern in the world. In 1894, Fehling was appointed full professor of obstetrics and director of the women's clinic at the Friedrichs University in Halle . He turned down the offer of the University of Tübingen in 1897. In 1900 he accepted an appointment at the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . In 1908/09 he was its rector .
As senior physician, he coordinated the activities of the university clinics in Strasbourg, which were converted into reserve hospitals during the First World War . At the end of 1918 he was expelled with the other German professors from the university and settled in Baden-Baden. Fehling died there in 1925 at the age of 77. Karl Franz (gynecologist) was his son-in-law .
Hermann Fehling and Heinrich Fritsch founded the Centralblatt für Gynäkologie in 1877 . He published, among other things, on the metabolism in the fetus, the formation of the rachitic pelvis, the so-called pregnancy kidney, the Braxton Hicks twist , castration in osteomalacia and eclampsia . The Fehling's tube , which is inserted into the cervix uteri to drain the pus in a pyometra , bears his name.
