Hermann Philipp von Giese (born June 24, 1827 in Borgfeld , † January 6, 1886 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Hermann was the son of the Prussian major general Johann von Giese (1785–1855) and his wife Therese Wilhelmine, née Grundmann (1808–1887).

Military career

Giese attended high schools in Bonn and Erfurt and then completed practical training with a geometer . On April 1, 1849, he joined the 31st Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a one-year volunteer . In the same year he took part in the battles at Ladenburg and Steinmauern as well as the siege of Rastatt during the suppression of the Baden Revolution . By November 1850, Giese advanced to secondary lieutenant and, after being promoted to prime lieutenant, from September 25, 1859, he worked as a regimental adjutant of the 31st Combined Infantry Regiment. In the same capacity, Giese was taken over on July 1, 1860 in the 3rd Thuringian Infantry Regiment (No. 71) formed from it . In mid-September 1862 he was promoted to captain and chief of the 12th company in Erfurt. In this position Giese took part in the fighting at Langenbrück , Podol , Münchengrätz and Königgrätz in 1866 during the war against Austria . For his behavior he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords, after the peace agreement .

Shortly before the beginning of the war against France , Giese was appointed commander of the 1st battalion in the Landwehr Infantry Regiment in Erfurt and in this position on July 20, 1870 major . As such he was from August 18 to December 12, 1870 commander of the containment troops of Pfalzburg . During this time, two battalions and Bavarian artillery were subordinate to him. After conquering the fortress, Giese acted as the commandant of Mulhouse from December 27, 1870 to March 19, 1871 . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion in the 3rd Thuringian Infantry Regiment 71 on June 17, 1871 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on July 3, 1875 . On May 13, 1879, he was initially commissioned with the command of the Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment No. 89 in Schwerin under position à la suite and, after being promoted to colonel , was appointed regimental commander on December 11, 1879. Giese was on June 24, 1880 legal knight of the Order of St. John and on January 23, 1881 with the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class awarded with bow and swords.
