Johann Wilhelm Giese , from 1847 von Giese , (born June 16, 1785 in Rhine , † December 30, 1855 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) was a Prussian major general .

Johann was the son of the flag smith in the hussar regiment "von Suter" Philipp Giese and his wife, a born Szamat.

Military career

Giese joined the Prussian Army Hussar Regiment “von Prittwitz” in 1806 and took part in the battles at Prussian Eylau and Heilsberg during the Fourth Coalition War. As a sergeant , he joined the squadron of La Roche-Aymon on July 1, 1807 . For his behavior at Ortelsburg Giese was awarded the military honor and for Braunsberg the gold medal of merit. Associated with this was a monthly salary of one thaler. King Friedrich Wilhelm III. also decreed that Giese was to be transferred to the ranks of the Fahnenjunker . By early October 1809, he was promoted to second lieutenant and took 1812 as regimental adjutant to the Prussian auxiliary corps on the side of France in the campaign against Russia in part. He fought with his hussars at Josefkawa, received the Legion of Honor for Baldawa and, in mid-March 1813, the order Pour le Mérite .

In the Wars of Liberation Giese fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Katzbach , Wartenburg , Leipzig and Laon . For Haynau he was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and for Paris with the Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class.

After the peace agreement, Giese was aggregated to the 6th Hussar Regiment at the end of January 1817 and commanded to the 3rd Reserve Cavalry Brigade in the mobile army corps in France. As prime lieutenant he was adjutant of the 15th , then the 16th Cavalry Brigade and on March 30, 1822 was promoted to Rittmeister adjutant of the 2nd Landwehr Brigade in Danzig . From March 30, 1834, he was employed as an adjutant at the General Command of the 1st Army Corps . Left in this position, Giese was aggregated to the 1st Dragoon Regiment at the beginning of September 1834 and transferred to the 4th Uhlan Regiment as a regular staff officer at the end of March 1836 . In this position, Giese received the Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class, at the end of September 1835 . On March 22, 1843, he was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel to lead the 7th Uhlan Regiment in Bonn and on January 16, 1844, Giese was appointed commander of the unit . At the end of March 1846 he was promoted to colonel . On June 15, 1847, Giese received permission to wear the nobility led by his ancestors . After he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III in 1847 . On October 14, 1848, Giese was transferred to Erfurt as commander of the 8th Cavalry Brigade , and a month later was added to the 7th Uhlan Regiment. He was then briefly from the beginning of May to mid-September 1849 commander of the cavalry brigade of the 3rd combined division in Erfurt and then became commander of the 6th cavalry brigade in Torgau . On October 27, 1849 he received the Commander's Cross with Oak Leaves of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen and on February 26, 1850 from Grand Duke Ludwig III. of Hesse and the Rhine the Commander's Cross II. Class of the order of Philip the Magnanimous . On April 4, 1850, Giese took his leave with the statutory pension , conferring the character of major general .

family

Giese married on February 19, 1825 in Danzig with Therese Wilhelmine Grundmann (1808-1887). The later Prussian Major General Hermann Philipp (1827–1886) and two daughters emerged from the marriage.
