Hermann von Prag (Latin Hermannus de Praga ; * around 1280 in Prague ; † December 31, 1349 in Wormditt , Warmia ) was Bishop of Warmia from 1337 to 1349 .

Life

Hermann von Prag probably came from a middle-class family who immigrated to Prague from Melnik . In 1300 he obtained a baccalaureate from the University of Bologna and later the academic degree of Doctor decretorum. It is not known when he became custodian of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague . In 1327 he was papal chaplain and auditor of the Rota at the court in Avignon . He was also a canon of the collegiate monastery of St. Peter and Paul on Vyšehrad and canon of Regensburg . Pope Benedict XII. appointed him in December 1337 against the resistance of the Teutonic Order and the cathedral chapter, which had elected Martin Zindal in 1334 , to the bishop of Warmia. The Pope himself gave him the episcopal ordination in early 1338. Since the cathedral chapter refused him access to Warmia, his presence in the Diocese of Warmia is only documented at the beginning of August 1340.

Hermann von Prag made great contributions to the settlement of his diocese area. He founded about 75 new localities and reached an agreement in 1340 with the Samland bishop Johann Clare and in 1341 with the Teutonic Order about the boundaries of his bishopric . A Warmia archdeacon is also documented for the first time in Heilsberg for 1341 . In 1346 he reached an agreement with the cathedral chapter on the division of the land.

As early as 1341, based on the Bohemian model, he founded the secular canon monastery of St. Salvator and all saints in Pettelkau near Braunsberg , which was moved to Glottau in 1343 and to Guttstadt in 1347 . In 1343 he organized the first diocesan synod in Frauenburg . In 1347 Augustinian hermits of the Bavarian Order Province settled in Rößel , followed by the Franciscans in Wartenburg in 1349 .

Hermann von Prag wrote several theological and canonical writings. He promoted education and schooling and founded the new town of Braunsberg. Because of his old age, he appointed his cathedral curator Johann Stryprock (later Bishop Johann II Stryprock ) as administrator in 1343 , who was mainly responsible for secular administration. In 1348 Hermann consecrated the new choir of the Frauenburg Cathedral , where he was buried on January 3, 1350. The day of his death is December 31, 1349.
