history

Draft of the south elevation by Ernst Brand, planning stage November 1898

The first plans for building the church were presented in 1888 by the architect Ernst Brand ( Trier ). In 1898 there was a second version of these plans. The church building was finally built in 1900–01. In 1928 the church was expanded by adding a sacristy according to plans by the architect Josef Wilhelm Stockhausen (Neunkirchen). A first restoration of the interior of the church took place in 1935, a second in 1976 by architect Richard Malter (Spiesen-Elversberg), during which the frescoes from 1935, which had been covered in the meantime, were exposed and restored. A third restoration by architect Ralf Bock in 1999 affected the roof of the church tower . The tower received a new tower cross and a new holder for the weathercock . In 2003, plans for the reconstruction of the chancel were submitted, which required extensive restoration.

In March 2015, the church had to be closed for safety reasons because the ceiling parts fell down. An assessment of the ceiling damage revealed a large number of cracks in the vault . In 2015 it will no longer be possible to renovate the ceiling, so the church will remain closed for an indefinite period.

Building description

architecture

The church was built in the neo-Gothic style. The basic architectural form of the church building is a stepped hall or pseudo basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan . The building is divided into a three-aisled nave , which is divided into a central nave and two slightly lower aisles , a transept and a five-sided polygonal choir . The ceilings of the naves are formed by ribbed vaults. The church tower is placed on the south side of the central nave and has a pointed helmet , which is surrounded by four smaller pointed helmets on the corners of the tower . Another, lower tower with an octagonal Spitzheim is located on the north side of the central nave and forms part of the entrance facade with the actual church tower.

The exterior of the church

The rose window above the main entrance portal and the large tracery windows on the front of the tower are remarkable in the exterior of the church . In 1999 the tower received a new tower cross. At the same time, the weathercock sitting on the tower cross was restored and given a new bracket. The work for this was carried out by the locksmith's shop in Klein (Elversberg).

The inside of the church

View inside the church

Inside the church there is sacred art by the church painter Alfred Gottwald ( Bonn ), who made frescoes in the choir in 1935, which take up the motto of the church "Jesus has a heart for people". These frescoes were whitewashed for a time, but were uncovered and restored in 1976. The Gothic- style high altar comes from the Altar Building Workshop in Port ( Münstermaifeld ), the windows were made by the Binsfeld (Trier) glass workshop. Furthermore, there is a Joseph altar in the church, which reminds of the builder of the church, Pastor Wilhelm Albertz, and an altar of Mary .

Bells

All five bells from 1923 were cast by the Saarburg bell foundry Mabilon for the Catholic community in Elversberg. In 1942, when the bells were removed during World War II, the bell was completely protected. Four of the five bells, with the exception of the big bell, were delivered to Hamburg, but came back completely unexpectedly after the war. This is the only completely preserved large bell in the Saarland from the interwar period. Today the five bronze bells are under monument protection.
