Jerome Richter

Hieronymus Richter (born January 11, 1837 in Altwilmsdorf , County Glatz , Province of Silesia , † April 8, 1899 in Glatz ) was a German genre and history painter .

Origin and career

Hieronymus Richter was the third of seven sons of a gilders and staffer .

After graduating from high school in Glatz, he studied painting with Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Johann von Schraudolph at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from May 1, 1858 to 1863, with the support of his uncle, the great dean Anton Ludwig from Ebersdorf . He was particularly influenced by Schraudolph's Christian Art . Already with his first work The twelve-year-old Jesus among the teachers in the temple , which he created for the church in Ullersdorf on the order of the Count of Magnis , he found great recognition. His study trips took him to Germany and Italy as well as to Paris.

After returning to Glatz, he was a drawing professor at the Glatz Gymnasium from 1865 to 1883 and founded a studio. He received numerous commissions for altar and other church paintings, stations of the cross and votive pictures. He also created historical representations and portrayed clerical and secular dignitaries. Some of his religious pictures were engraved in the Düsseldorf art school and have become widely known as a result.

In recognition of this, Richter was given the title of professor by the Prussian Minister of Spiritual, Educational and Medical Affairs in 1883 . He was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art .
