Hirzbrunnen is a district of the city of Basel . It is located on the eastern outskirts in Kleinbasel and borders in the north on the Kleinhüningen district and the German village of Weil am Rhein , in the east on the municipality of Riehen , in the south on the Rhine and in the west on the districts of Wettstein and Rosental ( A3 motorway ).

The Hirzbrunnen district is the largest district of Basel with a little more than 3 km 2 . The meadow flows through it. The quarter is named after the former Hirzbrunnen estate , with “Hirz” being a Basel German word for “ deer ”. Perhaps the estate belonged to the “zum Hirzen” inn in the Aeschenvorstadt in the old town of Grossbasel , or there was a spring there from which deer and other game drank.

With the public transport of the Basler Verkehrsbetriebe you can get to the center with the buses no.34 and 31 and with the trams no.2 and 6. Since the bus depot is located in the Hirzbrunnen district, there are still buses to the Hirzbrunnen district late at night (00:30). For night owls there is the night bus line D, which goes to the Hirzbrunnen district. The streets Bäumlihofstrasse and Riehenstrasse cross the quarter and lead to the city center and to Riehen .
