history

Chapel of St. Margareth on the castle plateau

The place is first mentioned around 1130 as "Hohenstein". The name refers to a castle on a high stone. The lords of Hohenstein were presumably ministerials to the lords of Fronhofen-Hohenburg. Around 1267 there was a branch of the Lords of Hohenburg themselves, who now named themselves after Hochstein. Over time, farmers settled on the castle hill and this is how the place came into being. The castle and village belonged to the Hohenburg-Bissingen dominion since the late Middle Ages . The castle, built before 1560, on the site of the former castle, was destroyed during the Thirty Years War .

religion

Hochstein always belonged to the parish of Bissingen. Today's St. Margareth Chapel on the site of the former castle was built at the end of the 17th century. The patronage of St. Margareth was probably transferred from the castle chapel.
