The VFR 400 R was the first supersport motorcycle from the manufacturer Honda , which was produced from 1986 to 1993 and in the 400 cm³ class had spur gear - driven camshafts in the V4 engine . The first series was also produced in an undisguised "K" version and also in a police or "P" version.
Model history
NC21: The first series was the small sister model of the Honda VFR 750 F in 1986 . It has a 16-inch front wheel with a white 3-spoke rim, an 18-inch wheel with a white 3-spoke rim at the rear, an aluminum rectangular tubular frame, an aluminum profile swing arm at the rear with a central spring strut and a hydraulically operated clutch. The 41 mm front fork is equipped with the Honda TRAC anti-dive system to prevent the fork from submerging when braking. The black exhaust was laid halfway up on the right.
NC24: The successor model "NC24" from 1987 onwards differed from the NC21 through the new single- sided swing arm on the rear wheel, the clutch was now operated by Bowden cable and there were minor changes to the engine. The wheels now had 8 spokes and the silver exhaust was moved to the top right.
NC30: From 1989 Honda introduced a completely revised version "NC30", which is still very popular today because of its external similarity to the Honda RC30 . In Germany it had 61.5 hp at 12,000 min −1 and 39 Nm at 10,000 min −1 . The silver exhaust was moved to the top left to improve the right wheel removal.
technology
engine
The water-cooled 399 cm³ 90-degree V-four-cylinder engine had four overhead camshafts that were driven by two centrally arranged gear cascades, each with four gear wheels. The camshafts with roller bearings opened the valves via bucket tappets. The mixture was formed via 4 Keihin constant pressure carburetors.
landing gear
The bridge frame consisted of extruded aluminum profiles with the steering head and swing arm mounts made of die-cast. The front wheel was suspended from a 43 mm telescopic fork. The rear wheel was lavishly guided with a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum. The fork and strut were from Showa and fully adjustable.
Comparable models
At the time, the Honda was in competition with the Kawasaki ZXR 400 , Yamaha FZR 400 and Suzuki GSX-R 400 in the 400 class.In-house, Honda also had a super sports car with a 4-cylinder in-line engine, the Honda CBR 400 .
