Horst Eberlein (born October 25, 1950 in Walsleben ) is a German Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Hamburg .

Life

Eberlein's parents came in 1947 as expellees from the strongly Catholic Warmia in Prussia in the Altmark , then where Horst Eberlein was born. Three siblings were born during the war , three siblings after the end of the war. When he was just under a year old , Horst Eberlein came to live with aunt and uncle in Mecklenburg near the Dobbertin monastery , where he grew up. His parents fled with the other children to Hamburg - Eidelstedt in 1958 and found shelter in the parsonage there because an uncle of Horst Eberlein was pastor there.

In 1965 he went to the Episcopal Pre-Seminary in Schöneiche , where he later graduated from high school. After studying Catholic theology at the seminary of Erfurt received Horst Eberlein on 16 April 1977 in Waren (Müritz) by Heinrich Theissing the ordination of the bishop's office Schwerin .

Eberlein first worked as a chaplain in Wittenburg and in the parish of St. Josef - St. Lukas in Neubrandenburg before he became pastor in Friedland in 1985 . In 1990 he became pastor in Hagenow and in 1996 pastor of the Christ Congregation in Rostock . In 2000 he received the honorary title of Papal Honorary Chaplain ( Monsignor ). Since 2009 Eberlein was provost at the provost church St. Anna in Schwerin . In 2015 he was appointed the non-resident cathedral chapter of the Hamburg Metropolitan Chapter .

On 9 February 2017 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Tisedi and Auxiliary Bishop of Hamburg. The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Stefan Heße on March 25, 2017 Hamburg St. Mary's Cathedral . Co-consecrators were the emeritus auxiliary bishops Hans-Jochen Jaschke and Norbert Werbs .

Eberlein is the first auxiliary bishop appointed in the Archdiocese of Hamburg. Unlike the previous auxiliary bishops Hans-Jochen Jaschke and Norbert Werbs, he is no longer responsible for one region, but for the entire archbishopric; his place of residence and work is Hamburg.

His bishop's coat of arms reminds of the diocese of Warmia , from which his family comes , with the lamb as a symbol of Christ . The other half of the coat of arms shows a heart with a cross, which stands in the Hamburg diocese coat of arms for the Mecklenburg part of the diocese. This and his motto Iesus sis mihi Iesus ("Jesus, be to me Jesus") remind of the blessed Niels Stensen and his last prayer before his death.
