IC 2589 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Hydra south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 156 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 2594 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on February 15, 1898 .
