At the IHF Cup 1989/90 25 took Handball part -Vereinsmannschaften, who qualified in the previous season in their home countries for the competition. It was the 9th edition of the IHF Cup. The defending champion was TuRU Düsseldorf from Germany. In the final, the Russian club SKIF Krasnodar prevailed against the Yugoslav representative RK Proleter Zrenjanin.
The competition started with ten games in the first round. The winners advanced to the second round and this was followed by the quarter-finals. All rounds including the final were carried out in a knockout system with a return leg. SKIF Krasnodar, TuRU Düsseldorf, CD Cajamadrid, SC Magdeburg , Dinamo Bucharest moved into the 2nd round by bye .
