The IIHF European Women's Champions Cup in 2004 was the first edition of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . Ten teams from ten countries took part in the tournament, which was held from October 15 to December 19, 2004. The final round was from 17 to 19 December 2004 at the Swedish Stockholm discharged.

Two finalists were set, the host AIK Solna and the Espoo Blues from Finland , as representatives of the highest placed countries according to the IIHF world rankings 2004, which had registered for the tournament. The two other finalists were determined in two qualifying tournaments.

qualification

The qualifying games took place from October 15-17, 2004. The Latvian Ventspils served as the venue for Group A and the Group B games were played in Bolzano .

Group A

The tournament in Ventspils , Latvia , was decided by the Russian champions SKIF Moscow in its favor and thus qualified for the final round of the best four teams. Already in the first tournament game they were able to defeat the later second in the table, DSHNK Almaty , and lay the foundation for successful qualification. With further victories over the overwhelmed MHK Martin team and over the hosts of SHK Laima Riga , the women from Moscow secured the final round ticket.

Group B

Group B saw the Swiss champions EV Zug confidently reach the final tournament. The Swiss were able to confidently win all of their encounters and ended the tournament with only two goals conceded. Third place went to the women of HC Cergy-Pontoise from France. The hosts of the HC Eagles Bolzano disappointed in fourth and last place .

Super final

The Super Final took place from December 17th to 19th, 2004 in the Swedish capital Stockholm . The Swedish champions and hosts AIK Solna and the Finnish champions Espoo Blues were seeded . In addition, there were the two qualifiers from the previous round, the Swiss champions EV Zug and the Russian title holder SKIF Moscow .

After the first day of play, to the surprise of many, EV Zug topped the table after a narrow win over Espoo Blues, while Solna and Moscow drew 2-2. On the second day of the tournament, however, after a clear 7-2 victory in a direct duel, the hosts ousted the Swiss from the top position. Thus, the Swedes went into the final duel against the Espoo Blues, who had defeated Moscow, one point ahead. With a 5-3 victory they secured the first European Cup in the history of women's ice hockey.
