The IIHF European Women's Champions Cup in 2006 was the third staging of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . 17 teams from 16 countries took part in the tournament, which was held from October 6 to December 10, 2006. The final round was from 5 to 10 December 2006 at the Swedish Katrineholm discharged.

One of the finalists was set, the host and defending champion AIK Solna . The four other finalists were determined in four qualifying tournaments.

For the first time, this year's tournament - like the other IIHF tournaments of the 2006/07 season - theoretically no longer resulted in a draw. Three points were awarded for a win after normal playing time of 60 minutes, and two points after extra time or penalty shootout . A defeat after extra time or penalty shoot-out brought you no points after regular time.

qualification

The qualification games took place from October 6th to 8th, 2006. The venue for group A was Flemingsberg in Sweden, group B games were played in Tukums , Latvia, group C pairings took place in Berlin and group D was played in Miercurea Ciuc .

Group A

At the tournament in Flemingsberg , Sweden , the hosts of the Segeltorps IF were able to prevail and thus qualify as the second team for the final tournament after defending champion AIK Solna. In the first and decisive tournament match against HC Cergy-Pontoise, they underlined their position as favorites with a 10-0 win. The HC Eagles Bozen and the Newcastle Lady Vipers proved to have no chance in the fight and the final qualification .

Group C

Game scene from the game between HC Lugano and OSC Berlin

The group C tournament was held in Berlin in halls 1, the Wellblechpalast , and 2 of the Hohenschönhausen Sports Forum, under the responsibility of the German champions OSC Berlin . Until the last tournament game - the direct comparison of both teams - HC Lugano and OSC Berlin had a chance of making it into the final tournament, as they were at the top of the table with six points each. Ultimately, however, Lugano prevailed with a 4-1 victory and bought the ticket to the Super Final . For the second time in a row, a team from Switzerland was able to prevail against the hosts in a preliminary round tournament taking place in Germany. While the Herlev Hornets from Denmark took third place despite relatively narrow defeats against Lugano and Berlin, the Ferencváros Stars Budapest finished the tournament as a beaten group last.

Super final

The Super Final took place from December 5th to 10th, 2006 in Katrineholm , Sweden . The host and defending champion AIK Solna was seeded . Then there were the four qualifiers from the previous round, the Swiss champions HC Lugano , the Russian champions Tornado Moskowskaja Oblast , the Finnish champions Ilves Tampere and Segeltorps IF as the second Swedish representative. Due to the participation of a fifth team compared to the two previous years, the hosting of the final tournament was extended from three to five days.

In the very first game of the first day of the competition, the two Swedish representatives met, which the defending champions and hosts from the capital clearly won 8: 1. On the following day, the remaining three teams intervened in the competition. While AIK Solna had no play, the Russian representative Tornado Moskowskaja Oblast prevailed against HC Lugano and Segeltorps IF scored three points for the first time after the previous day's defeat against Ilves Tampere. For the third matchday, only one game was scheduled in which the Russians inflicted their second defeat on Tampere and took over the top of the table with six points.

Two games were scheduled for each of the following three game days, which meant that each team had a day off. Solna and Segeltorps were able to catch up with the leading Russians through victories, while Tampere and Lugano no longer had a chance of winning the tournament. The penultimate matchday brought the next decision with the victory of Tornado Moskowskaja Oblast against Segeltorps IF, as the tournament winner had to be determined in the final duel of the tournament between the three times victorious Russians and the defending champions. There Solna won 3-0 and secured the title for the third time in the third edition of the competition.
