The IIHF European Women Champions Cup 2007/08 was the fourth edition of the competition organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The tournament, which was held from October 5, 2007 to February 3, 2008, was attended by 21 teams from 21 countries. The final round was from 29 January to 3 February 2008 in the Swedish Stockholm discharged.

One of the finalists was set, the host and defending champion AIK Solna . The four other finalists were determined in two qualifying rounds.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round games took place from October 5th to 7th, 2007. The venue for Group A was Sofia in Bulgaria , Group B games were played in Martin in Slovakia , Group C pairings took place in Cergy and Group D was played in the Czech capital Prague .

Group A

Group A meetings took place in Sofia , Bulgaria . After three days of the tournament, the Kazakh champions Aisulu Almaty confidently prevailed against the competition with three wins and a goal difference of 13: 0. The duel, which was ultimately decisive for the tournament victory, was already clearly won by the Kazakh women on the first day of the tournament 4-0 against the Austrian representative EHV Sabers Vienna . The host HK Sofia secured third place as the games of the fourth team, the Herlev Hornets from Denmark, were each rated 5-0 for the opponent.

The team from Herlev did not arrive with the required minimum number of actors. In fact, they had won the game against Sofia 55-0 and beat Vienna 6-5. Against Aisulu Almaty, however, they clearly lost 8-0 and would only have finished second.

Group B

Preliminary group B was played in Martin , Slovakia , where the hosts of the MHC Martin laid the foundation for reaching the intermediate round on the first day of the tournament. They defeated the later group runner-up Terme Maribor 5-2. On the same day, the women of SHK Laima Riga won very clearly against the women of the Turkish champions Büyükşehir Belediyesi Ankara SK, who were clearly inferior throughout the tournament . Since Maribor beat Riga on the second day of the tournament, the Slovaks only needed one point in the last game against Riga to safely reach the second round. This succeeded with a defeat in the penalty shootout against Riga, which thus had to be content with third place.

Intermediate round

The games of the intermediate round took place from November 30th to December 2nd, 2007. The venue for Group E was the Russian Dmitrow , near the capital Moscow , and Group F was played in Berlin . The two teams in the first places in a group qualified for the Super Final .

Group E

The Group E games, hosted by last year's second tornado, Moskovskaya Oblast , were held in Dmitrov . In addition to the Slovakians of the MHK Martin who qualified in the preliminary round and the Kazakh champion Aisulu Almaty , the host and the Finnish title holder Espoo Blues were also set for the tournament.

The women of Aisulu Almaty caused a surprise in the tournament, winning their games against Espoo and Moskowskaja Oblast in the penalty shootout and after a clear 7-1 victory over MHK Martin went to the Super Final as the tournament winner . Due to the 1-0 defeat of the hosts in the final group game against the Espoo Blues, they failed early on, as with this result Espoo, second in the table, solved the additional ticket for the final.

Group F.

Scene from the game between HC Cergy-Pontoise and HC Slavia Prague

The intermediate round of group F was organized by the German champions OSC Berlin and took place in the Wellblechpalast in Berlin . In addition to Berlin, last year's finalist HC Lugano from Switzerland was seeded for the tournament. HC Cergy-Pontoise and HC Slavia Prague had also qualified in the preliminary round .

Cergy-Pontoise and Prague had traveled to Berlin as outsiders, whereby Prague made it harder than expected for HC Lugano in the first game and held a 2-2 until the last third, but then lost 6-2. Berlin was also able to beat the French representative on the first day of the tournament. So the following day the two unbeaten teams came to a duel, which the Swiss women contested victoriously. Since Prague won the game against Cergy-Pontoise at the same time, Lugano was the first participant in Group F to qualify for the Super Final . On the final day, the second finalist decided in the game between the hosts and the Prague women. There the Germans won a hard-fought game in the penalty shootout and were the first German team in the history of the European Women Champions Cup to travel to the final tournament. Cergy, on the other hand, was clearly inferior to the other teams and was only able to take the Fair Play Cup with him in the end.

Super final

The Super Final took place from 29 January to 3 February 2008 in the Swedish Stockholm instead. The host and defending champion AIK Solna was seeded . In addition, there were the four qualifiers from the previous round, the Swiss champions HC Lugano , the German champions OSC Berlin , the Finnish champions Espoo Blues and Aisulu Almaty as the Kazakh representative.

In the very first game of the first day of the competition, the two Scandinavian representatives met, which the defending champion and host from the capital won 4-2. On the following day, the remaining three teams intervened in the competition. While AIK Solna had no play, the Swiss representative HC Lugano prevailed against OSC Berlin and Espoo Blues was able to score three points for the first time after the previous day's defeat against Aisulu Almaty. On the third matchday, two games were scheduled again, in which Solna and Espoo each achieved their second victory.

On the following day, only one match was scheduled, so on the following two days of competition one team each had a day off. With a win, they celebrated their third success in the third tournament game, which meant that the first teams no longer had a chance of winning the tournament. Solna's competitors were then able to use the advanced day of the Super Final to reduce the gap again. But since Lugano lost for the second time and Espoo had lost the direct comparison against Solna, the Swedes were already the tournament winners before the last day and thus secured the Cup for the fourth time in total and in a row. They underpinned their sovereign tournament victory with a victory over the OSC Berlin. The Espoo Blues came in second, ahead of Aisulu Almaty.

A total of only 900 spectators attended the ten tournament games.
