IV Shards
(1983)

IV is a double album by Clay Stones Shards . Because of the black album cover it is also called "Die Schwarze". It's a collection of very different influences, from folk to punk , and doesn't have much in common with the earlier Schherd albums, even if it continues the development from the previous album Wenn die Nacht am tiefest… . Left-wing slogans such as power broken, what makes you broken or no power for nobody can no longer be found here, but some songs are still very political, for example in the song The tower collapses .

The Tarot Secret

All songs (with the exception of Morning Light ) were written with the help of tarot cards. The so-called “tarot secret” was only revealed years after front man Rio Reiser's death, because it was feared that the magic of the innovative and sometimes very different songs would be lost. Actually all texts are bursting with images and metaphors, hardly anything is clear. Since all living participants are of the opinion that it is permissible to step out of the "magic circle", here is a list of the tarot card drawing in 1980:

  • January 22nd - Der Teufel : For this the song Heimweh was created , which was also the working title of the album. All band members contributed to the text, the result was brought into shape by Hannes Eyber and Rio Reiser. The chords were determined by random, the rhythm comes from a “magical” series of numbers.
  • February 12th - Die Welt : Swamp Schlock . Similar to homesickness, the text was created through series poetry. "Harikafulas" are the first letters of the band members' first names (Hannes - Rio - Kai - Funky - Lanrue).
  • The star : From this card the strange emerges temporarily closed . Hannes Eyber wrote a completely incomprehensible text, which has also been electronically alienated (in the newly mixed version of the complete work (Die Box) it is easier to understand if you listen carefully). The music also seems completely strange. The idea behind it was that nobody would understand the stars.
  • The car : little joys . Again created by series poetry.
  • March 27th - The Hermit : Goodbye - the hermit tries to find his way back into the world. The text is a more or less alphabetical listing of first and first names.
  • March 31st - The temperance : The song S'is was created again with the involvement of all band members.
  • June 4th - The Magician : As in the days of Midian, consists of a list of scenes of wars and acts of violence as well as of the capitals of warring or war-supporting powers, as well as a biblical quote sung by a children's choir ( Isa 9,4  LUT ); the title of the song comes from the previous verse Isa 9,3  LUT .
  • June 7 - The Empress : Inspired by the book Letters to an unborn child by Oriana Fallaci this was the song Stay where you are .
  • June 10th - The tower : Since the map shows a tower that has collapsed from a lightning strike, Rio wrote the song The tower collapses , which humorously brings up social problems.
  • June 13th - The court : a rule violation, because Lanrue proposed the song Morgenlicht , the text of which comes from Reinhard von der Marwitz, the host of the Berlin gay bar “Anderes Ufer”. Parts of the song are in Rios Matth. XI, 15 quoted from his solo album Über Alles .
  • June 17th - The High Priestess : The Narcissistic Nobody loves me as the High Priestess' lament.
  • June 18 - The moon : a clear association, ebb and flow .
  • June 20 - The Hanged Man : The map shows how someone is hung by their feet. Funky, who wrote the lyrics, had himself hung up by his feet and got the idea for the song SNAFT The song is called because of a typo (snaft for gentle).
  • June 23rd - The Hierophant : (To a) happy ending as a gospel-like final song with a women's choir .
  • June 26th - The Fool : There! .
  • June 28th - The ruler : gold , also a clear association.
  • October 24th - The Wheel of Fate : Beyond Eden , one of the most famous broken pieces.
  • October 25th - The decision (probably corresponds to the Die Liebenden card ): The stranger from India , a song without the vowel "e". The title is that of a novel by Karl May .
  • October 25th - Death : The text for the film kiss only makes sense if you know that it was written for this card ("Like a film kiss - timeless. You are so simple - the end")
  • October 26th - Justice : I have nothing . ("I have nothing - and you have nothing - let's make something of it.")
  • October 26th - Die Sonne : The song Kribbel Krabbel is about masturbation. The last stanza is in Italian.
  • October 27th - Die Kraft : Everything is correct was written under time pressure and overnight.

Four lyricists and three composers

The tarot cards also determined who performed which task in which song, i.e. who wrote the lyrics and the compositions. For the first time, drummer Funky K. Götzner (as lyricist) and bassist Kai Sichtermann (as composer), who had never contributed anything before, also took part. Also new was lyricist Hannes Eyber, who was a friend of the band and was later to write lyrics for Rio Reiser. The song Morgenlicht was not written on a tarot card because it was a bit older. It comes from a production for the theater group "Transplantis" in 1978, the text is by Reinhard von der Marwitz. This expansion of the original Rio and Lanrue songwriting team explains the great diversity and creativity of the songs.

Musical experiments

Another component is the musical variety in production. Guest musicians were invited to the recordings: Jörg Schlotterer, who had left the band a few years ago, returned as a trombonist and flautist , Wolfgang Seidel , who had been the first broken drummer a decade ago, played a few percussion instruments ( under the pseudonym Wolfsequencea) and Klaus van Velzen played the saxophone . In addition, a mixed choir and a children's choir from Niebüll took part (on the song Wie in den Tage Midians ). The shards themselves also tried their hand at more unusual instruments, of which the dulcimer was the strangest.
