Ilya Sergeyevich Klimkin

Ilja Sergejewitsch Klimkin ( Russian Илья́ Серге́евич Кли́мкин ; English Ilia Klimkin ; born August 15, 1980 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian figure skater who started in a single race .

Career

Ilya Klimkin started figure skating at the age of four. His grandmother made him think it would be good for his health. However, it took Klimkin ten years to learn to love figure skating. His long-time coach was Igor Russakov until his sudden death in 2003 . Klimkin then trained with Viktor Kudryavtsev . He started for the club SC Moskvich. Klimkin is the first figure skater in the world to show two different quadruple jumps ( Salchow and Toeloop ) in one program. That was in 1999 in Oberstdorf at the Nebelhorn Trophy . He turned his pirouettes in both directions. One of his trademarks was the so-called "cantilever". In 1999 Klimkin became Junior World Champion .

Klimkin won his only medal at a major international championship with bronze at the 2004 European championship .

In the summer of 2002, Klimkin injured his calf, which led to inflammation and three operations. Nevertheless, only a little later he achieved his first and only Grand Prix victory at the NHK Trophy . He also qualified for the Grand Prix final , which he concluded with a silver medal. In the fall of 2004, Klimkin had to undergo an Achilles tendon operation and was therefore unable to complete the 2005 season, which hindered him in preparation for the 2006 Winter Olympics , which he finished in eleventh place.

On April 19, 2007 Ilya Klimkin resigned from amateur sports.
