In the Heights is a musical film by Jon M. Chu that was originally scheduled to release in US theaters on June 26, 2020. It is an adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical of the same name by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes about the residents of the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan.

Many people live in Washington Heights , a district of New York City in north Manhattan , including Usnavi, who runs a bodega . After inheriting his grandmother's fortune, he would like to close his business and move back to the Dominican Republic . But something keeps him in Washington Heights too, according to a Cuban woman , and Nina, Usnavi's childhood friend, is also returning to the area.

The film is based on the musical In the Heights with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a text by Quiara Alegria Hudes , which addresses the influence of gentrification on an immigrant quarter . Miranda had started working on In the Heights in the second year of his undergraduate degree . The musical combines Latin American musical styles and hip-hop with conventional musical music. An early variant of In the Heights premiered in 1999. In 2007 the musical Off-Broadway and 2008 on Broadway . Miranda played the main role of Usnavi in it. The Broadway production won four Tony Awards and the accompanying recording won a Grammy .
The musical was adapted for the film by Marc Klein . Directed by Jon M. Chu . In the film, Miranda now plays the Piragua Guy. In addition to him, Anthony Ramos in the role of Usnavi de la Vega, Melissa Barrera in the role of Vanessa and Stephanie Beatriz as Carla can be seen in the film.
The shooting took place in Washington Heights , the location of the film. The name refers to Fort Washington, the highest point in Manhattan. Alice Brooks acted as camerawoman .
A first teaser trailer was released on December 10, 2019. The film was due to be released in US cinemas on June 26, 2020, and the cinema release in Germany was planned for August 6, 2020. However, the US launch date has been postponed to June 18, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. A German start date is not yet known.
