The Mittweida University of Applied Sciences ( HSMW for short ) is a university of applied sciences based in the Saxon city of Mittweida . With 6,616 enrolled students (WS 2018/19), it is the largest university of applied sciences in Saxony . The abbreviations HTWM and IHM stand for the older names Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Mittweida and Engineering University Mittweida .
history
On May 7, 1867, the private educational institution was founded as Technikum Mittweida by Carl Georg Weitzel and local companies, after Wilhelm Heinrich Uhland gave up the management of his Technikum (founded in Mittweida in 1865) after two years and moved it to Frankenberg / Sa. continued. Alfred Udo Holzt headed the technical center from 1892 to 1936 . From 1900 it developed into one of the largest and most important private technical engineering training centers for mechanical and electrical engineers in Germany. In 1901 the teaching factory workshops were set up , later known as Precise . designated. In 1923 the Technikum Mittweida reached the largest number up to then with over 2,300 students. In 1935 it was converted to the Mittweida engineering school . On April 1, 1925, Alfred Udo Holzt's son-in-law , the lawyer Moritz Viktor Oster , joined the management of the Mittweida technical center and took over the office of administrative director. He worked at the facility until 1947.
In 1938 Ludwig Zipperer took over the management of the Mittweida engineering school. In 1947, teaching was resumed, specializing in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, agricultural machinery and automotive engineering. From 1951 onwards, no more students were accepted into the fields of mechanical engineering. In 1969, the company was converted to the Mittweida engineering college, specializing in electronics technology , information technology and device technology . From 1976 onwards, all graduates were allowed to hold the title of qualified engineer . In 1976, research began on the processing of silicon and ceramics with laser radiation and the laser resistance of optical layers. The engineering college in Mittweida received the right to award doctorates to obtain the academic degree of doctoral engineer in 1980. The center for electronic device construction and the new building of the cafeteria with library were established in 1983. The laser application center for laser technology and technology (LAZ) was established in 1988. The political reorganization and the new beginning as a university of applied sciences led to major changes in 1990. In a democratic election in 1990, the university members elected Friedrich Reinhard Schmidt as the founding rector of the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences.
In 1991 the eight-semester technical college education began in the field of economics , and in 1992 the institution received the status of a technical college with cooperative doctorate rights. This year the mechanical engineering / precision engineering department was able to build on the tradition of the technical center with its foundation. The social work department was founded in 1993, and training in the media technology course began in 1994 . Between 1995 and 2006, the university was able to study environmental technology. In 1997 a mechanical engineering laboratory and a high-voltage laboratory were put into operation. The foundation of the Laserinstitut Mittelachsen eV took place in 1997. In 2000 the university sports hall could be completed. The inauguration of the Grunert - de Jácome building with a multi-media multi-purpose hall in an extension was handed over in 2002. From 2003 the media courses were merged into a new media faculty . In 2009 the name was changed to Mittweida University of Applied Sciences . The designation as FH had become dispensable. In 2005 5000 students were enrolled.
In 2018 the 3rd Central German Meeting on Bioinformatics took place at the university.
Awards
Since 1999 the University of Mittweida has been a “partner university for top sport”. In 2000 the General German University Sports Association awarded Mittweida University with the title “University of the Year 2000”.
In 2009, the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences received the “Family-Friendly University” certificate for promoting the compatibility of work or study and family.

Education
The Mittweida University of Applied Sciences offers engineering, media, economics and social science courses, some as distance learning. They lead to the degrees of Bachelor, Master and Diploma. The University of Mittweida is the only state university in Germany to offer an English-language bachelor's degree in mathematics.
The Faculty of Media maintains an FM radio station ( 99drei Radio Mittweida ), a journalistic online platform ( medienMITTWEIDA ) and reports on a digital television station with the three channels "HSMW 1 Aktuell", "HSMW 2 Wissen" and "HSMW 3 Kultur" Recordings and live events from university life.
The multi-day media forum Mittweida has been organized annually since 2014 by students of the media faculty. The focus is always on current developments in the technical and creative areas of the media. Representatives from the media industry give lectures, organize workshops or take part in panel discussions.
The club station for radio amateurs at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences operates in the Alfred-Udo-Holzt-Bau. The identifier is DKØMIT .
research
Research at Mittweida University is characterized by application orientation and interdisciplinarity. It is shaped by four main research areas:

The HRK research focuses are regularly evaluated. Criteria include a. Third-party funding per year, number of scientists, scientific publications and patent applications as well as cooperative doctoral procedures.
International Relations
The Mittweida University of Applied Sciences maintains scientific relationships with around 100 partners abroad. The International Office acts as coordinator, initiator and contact person. She participates in the Erasmus program and works with the German Academic Exchange Service . The Mittweida University of Applied Sciences maintains international research cooperation with around 80 research partners.

Since 1993, the 150th birthday of Carl Georg Weitzel , the founder of the Mittweida technical center, the Förderkreis Mittweida 1867 e. V. the Carl-Georg-Weitzel-Prize for scientific achievements annually. The prize is endowed with 1000 euros.
- Gerhard Neumann Prize
The legacy of Gerhard Neumann , former Vice President D. from General Electric, following, the Gerhard Neumann Prize will be awarded by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 2008. The prize donated by Ms. Clarice Neumann is endowed with 500 euros and is awarded for an outstanding technical innovation.
- Wolfgang Schulhoff Prize
The award was donated by Wolfgang Schulhoff (Member of the Bundestag). It is endowed with 1500 euros and is awarded for outstanding scientific work in the field of economics with a recognizable interdisciplinary character.
- Ingrid von Reyher Prize
The award is named after Ingrid von Reyher , who taught physics, chemistry and materials science at the Mittweida engineering school. The award is given for outstanding educational achievements and a high level of commitment to equality and the promotion of opportunities at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. It was awarded for the first time in 2012.
- Helmut Lindner Prize
The namesake for this award is the director of studies Helmut Lindner , who taught at the engineering school in Mittweida and wrote numerous internationally recognized textbooks on physics. The prize is awarded to teachers who have outstanding pedagogical and didactic skills and who combine their teaching activities with a high level of relevance to current practice and research. The prize is endowed with 1000 euros and can be divided.
- Carl Springe Prize
The award was donated by Carl Springe's grandson , Helmut von Dreising , in 1904 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Carl Springe's graduation from the Mittweida technical center. The Faculty of Information Technology & Electrical Engineering awards the prize for outstanding master's or diploma theses in the field. The prize is endowed with 1000 euros.
- Herbert E. Graus Prize
The namesake Herbert E. Graus is a professor at Mittweida University and an entrepreneur. He was a co-founder and managing partner of ce Consumer Electronic AG for 20 years. Herbert E. Graus teaches start-up management and corporate management at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. The prize has been awarded to promising business ideas in the media sector since 2007. A complete business plan must be presented.
- Computer science award
The computer science prize is awarded annually to students or graduates for the best overall performance in an IT-oriented course at Mittweida University. The prize was donated by the Society for the Promotion of Computer Science and Business Informatics at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. V.
- Promotion Prize for the Association of Laboratory Workshops University Mittweida e. V.
The prize is awarded annually for practical and ready-to-use technical or technical-economic results in master's or diploma theses. The prize is endowed with 700.00 euros.
- Mittweidaer Prize for Laser Technology
Since 2011 the Laserinstitut Mittelachsen e. V. a prize for the best bachelor, diploma and master theses in the field of laser technology. The prize is endowed with 1,000 euros and is divisible.
- Clarice and Gerhard Neumann grant
Clarice Neumann, Gerhard Neumann's widow, suggested the Clarice and Gerhard Neumann scholarship . It is awarded by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences to particularly talented and committed students in the Faculty. Provided that the appropriate funds are available, at least one scholarship of 100 euros per month is awarded each year.
The Mittweida University of Applied Sciences also awards the Silver or Golden Badge of Honor for outstanding achievements for the educational institution at irregular intervals. The award is not endowed. The prior award of the silver badge is not a requirement for the award of the golden badge of honor.
