The International Association of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) is the global umbrella organization in the medical field of physiological research.

history

At the end of the 19th century, when the progress in medicine accelerated more and more, of which physiology also participated, physiologists in many countries wished to meet in order to get to know colleagues from other countries personally, who up to that time only were known from the specialist literature. And so the first congress of this kind was organized in Basel , Switzerland , in 1889 , where it was agreed that these meetings would be repeated every three years at different locations. And so the next meeting took place in Liège , Belgium , in 1892 . This cycle was maintained until 1989; interrupted only during the two world wars. From 1989 the world congresses followed every four years. Nevertheless, it lasted from the first meeting in Basel to 1929 when in Boston with the constitution and the election to a standing committee, these symposia also received their de jure official framework.

However, the administrative framework of the Union was only discussed at the Copenhagen meeting in Denmark and ratified in Montreal ( Canada ) in 1953 . The founding countries were Argentina , Australia , Belgium, Canada, Chile , France , West Germany , Italy , Japan , the Netherlands , the Scandinavian countries, Spain , Switzerland, United Kingdom , United States , Uruguay and the Soviet Union , with which the International Association of Physiological Sciences ( IUPS) was finally launched. At about the same time, however, the biochemists and pharmacologists split off and founded their own organizations.

In 1955 she got a seat and vote on the Presidium of the International Science Council (ISC) , or its predecessor organization the International Science Council (ICSU). At the same time she became a full member of the Council for International Organizations of Medical Science (CIOMS) and the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS). ! In 956 Hungary and Czechoslovakia joined the IUPS. In 1959 Poland and Romania followed , as well as the Latin American Association for Physiology.

At the 1962 Congress in Leiden (Netherlands), Finland and Sweden , previously represented by the Scandinavian Physiological Society, received full membership, plus Chile , previously represented by the ALACF, and Bulgaria , the Republic of China (Taiwan) , Egypt , Israel , Turkey and Yugoslavia .

The IUSP finally became saturated in the legal sense in 1969 as a non-profit organization with its administration seat in Washington, DC (USA), as was decided by a resolution of the general assembly a year earlier at the same location.

Mission and purpose

The IUPS promotes and networks biophysiological research on a national and international level. To do this, it uses all the possibilities of modern communication technology. It organizes and supports symposia, workshops and conferences on a national and multinational level.

The union consists of 45 national members, 13 associate members, 2 affiliate members and 5 regional members.

Together with the American Physiological Society (APS), the IUPS publishes the periodical Physiology every two months

Since 2010, the IUSP has been working under the umbrella of the International Science Council (ISC) on an interdisciplinary basis with 10 other organizations in which the goals and assignments that it has set overlap

structure

In order to make its activities as effective as possible, the IUSP has created eight so-called commissions in which precisely defined tasks are distributed:
