Iron Maiden ( English for: " Iron Maiden ") is the debut album of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden . The album was released in the UK on April 14, 1980 by EMI .

Emergence

In December 1979, Iron Maiden were signed by EMI. This was preceded by the extremely successful EP The Soundhouse Tapes, which the band released through their own distribution. Shortly before recording began, Dennis Stratton and Clive Burr joined the band.

The album Iron Maiden is the only album by the band that was produced with the collaboration of producer Will Malone. During the recording, however, Malone lost interest in the ongoing project, so the band had to take the rest of the production into their own hands. The band - especially Steve Harris  - criticized the quality of the production. Many fans, however, like the rough, almost punk- like sound. Iron Maiden is also the only Iron Maiden album that Dennis Stratton can be heard on; he left the band shortly after the release and was replaced by Adrian Smith .

With Iron Maiden and Prowler , two songs from the EP The Soundhouse Tapes are newly recorded versions on the album.

On this album and the previous single Running Free , the band mascot Eddie can be seen for the first time . The zombie-like figure can be found on all Iron Maiden releases, with a few exceptions, and also appears regularly on stage shows.

  • Sanctuary also appeared together with Wrathchild from the follow-up album Killers on the compilation Metal for Muthas . The song was originally only included on the American version; it is only generally available in newer editions since 1998.
  • Transylvania is one of the four instrumentals that Iron Maiden recorded.
  • Strange World was already planned for the previous EP, but could not be included on it due to financial problems.

Single releases

Running Free was released as the first single on February 23, 1980. It reached number 34 in the British singles charts. As a b-side, the single with Burning Ambition contained the only studio outtake from the pre-production of the album. With this single, the band appeared on the British TV show Top of the Pops and played the song live . They were the first band since The Who 1972 that did not play for playback .

On June 7, 1980, the second single was released with Sanctuary and reached number 29 in the UK charts. Maiden's manager Rod Smallwood named his management company after this song.
