Child abuse allegation

On August 21, 2013, Wesołowski was removed from office by Pope Francis on charges of child abuse . According to reports in the Dominican media, the diplomat is said to have paid seven underage boys for sexual acts. As a citizen of the Vatican, he should be tried in a Vatican court; he could face up to ten years in prison. June 12, 2015 was set as the start of negotiations. In the canonical process on June 27, 2014 , the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith recognized in the first instance that the clergy had been lost and transferred him to the laity . Wesołowski appealed against this decision, which was originally supposed to be decided in October 2014.

After a first hearing in September 2014, Wesołowski was initially not detained by a criminal court of the Vatican State for health reasons, but instead placed under house arrest on September 23, 2014 after there was a risk of escape. According to the Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi, the order was made personally by Pope Francis . Shortly thereafter, it became known that Wesołowski had collected more than 100,000 child pornographic files on his computer. On December 3, 2014, there was a meeting of the Attorney General of the Dominican Republic, Francisco Domínguez Brito, with the promoter Iustitiae at the Court of Justice of the Vatican State, Gian Piero Milano, at which the status of the investigation was discussed. Wesołowski's house arrest was relaxed at this point, but the obligation to stay in the Vatican remained.

The trial, for which the defendant did not appear, opened on July 11, 2015 and was suspended for an indefinite period a few minutes later due to Wesołowski's illness.
