Jacob I (Baden)
Margrave Jakob I of Baden (born March 15, 1407 in Hachberg ; † October 13, 1453 in Mühlburg ) ruled the margraviate of Baden from 1431 to 1453.
Life
Jakob I of Baden was the first-born son of Margrave Bernhard I of Baden and Anna von Oettingen . The father was very religious and known as a church founder, so his children also enjoyed a strictly religious upbringing. He founded the Fremersberg Monastery and helped the Baden-Baden Collegiate Church to gain greater importance. Jacob I was the opposite of his father, Enea Silvio de Piccolomini described him as follows: "Famous among the Germans because of his justice and intelligence" .
At a young age he was administrator of the Hohenberg estates until he came to the Baden government at the age of 24 . He was a pugnacious knight , thrifty father of the country and popular among princes as an arbitrator . Both emperors - Siegmund and Friedrich III. - among whom he served valued him.
When his sister Agnes fled the dispute over the succession, due to a premature birth due to a premarital unequal relationship with a noblewoman from Baden, the margrave lost claims in Schleswig . He was so annoyed about it that he interned Agnes in Ebersteinburg for the rest of her life . The incident went down in history as "The Gottorf Twin Fall " .
When the Sponheim Treaty came into force in 1437 , he received possessions on the Moselle . In 1442 he bought half of the Lahr and Mahlberg estate from the descendants of Walter von Geroldseck for 30,000 guilders .
He had his headquarters at Hohenbaden Castle high above the thermal baths of the city of Baden-Baden . During his reign, he expanded the castle into a palace with over 100 very representative rooms. The preserved ruin can be visited today.
