James Newcome

James William Scobie Newcome (born July 24, 1953 in Aldershot ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Carlisle in the Church of England since 2009 .

education

Newcomes father was an officer in the Royal Artillery of the United Kingdom . Newcome therefore spent part of his childhood and youth in Malta and Germany . He attended from 1966 to 1970, the Marlborough College , a co-educational private school in Marlborough in the county of Wiltshire . From 1971 to 1974 he studied Modern History ( Modern History ) at Trinity College of Oxford University . There he obtained a Master of Arts in history in 1974 . From 1975 to 1977, he then studied theology at Selwyn College of Cambridge University . There he graduated in 1977 with a Master of Arts in theology.

Church career

In preparation for the priesthood , Newcome attended Ridley Hall College, Cambridge University from 1975–1978 . In 1978 he was ordained a deacon and in 1979 he was ordained a priest. From 1978 to 1982 he was Assistant Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in All Saints Parish , All Saints Church , in Leavesden in the Diocese of St Albans . From 1982 to 1994, as a pastor ( Vicar ) at the Bar Hill Church in Bar Hill in District South Cambridgeshire and as a priest in Dry Drayton in the Diocese of Ely operates. During this time he worked from 1983 to 1988 as a tutor and lecturer in the subjects of pastoral theology , Christian ethics and integrative theology for the Cambridge Federation of Theological Colleges . From 1993 to 1994 he was Country Dean in the North Stowe Dean's Office. In 1994 he was Residenzkanoniker ( residentiary Canon ) at the Cathedral of Chester . At the same time he was from 1994 to 2000 as Diocesan Director of Ordinands responsible for the training of candidates for priesthood and lay clergy . From 1996 to 2002 he was then responsible as Diocesan Director of Ministry, Education and Training for the entire church office, as well as for the education and training of priests in the diocese. From 2000 to 2002 he was Proctor ( Proctor on Convocation ) of the General Synod of the Church of England. In 2002 he was appointed Suffragan Bishop of Penrith in the Diocese of Carlisle. Newcome has been Bishop of Carlisle since 2009. He is the successor to Graham Dow . The official announcement was made in May 2009. In October 2009, Newcome was officially inaugurated at Carlisle Cathedral.

Newcome holds a number of honorary church positions. He is chairman of the Diocesan Board for Ministry and Training . He is President of the Churches Together interdenominational forum in Cumbria . He is also the official representative of the Church of England at the Scottish Episcopal Church . Newcome is a member of the Society for Study of Christian Ethics , which deals with the teaching and scientific research of Christian ethics and moral theology . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts .

Newcome has made several appearances on the radio as a speaker, speaker and commentator . He has also written books , journal articles and conference papers.

Working in public

In questions of canon law, Newcome has so far taken a rather conservative position. This was also evident in his general attitude towards the question of homosexuality . Until now, Newcome has strictly rejected same-sex marriages . In his opinion, these could have no place in the Anglican Church .

Newcome has a positive attitude towards technology and modern technologies . Technology is a gift from God that has been entrusted to people for meaningful use. Newcome is a fan of nuclear energy . He is a supporter of the Sellafield nuclear facility and also advocated building another nuclear power plant in West Cumbria as this would also create jobs in the area. Newcome said that nuclear energy is part of the “ green energy mix ”. Newcomes attitudes led to a demonstration by the organization Radiation Free Lakeland prior to his enthronement . Newcome is also a fan of wind farms .

In September 2007, Newcome was among the signatories of a Church of England declaration in which the signatories called on the UK Minister for International Development to work for fairer trade regulations , fair economic conditions and greater liberalization of world trade .

Membership in the House of Lords

On October 3, 2013 Newcome was in his capacity as bishop of Carlisle on the principle of seniority as the next most senior bishop of the Church of England as minister Lord member of the House of Lords .

Private

Newcome has been married since 1977 and has four grown children. His wife Alison is a nurse with an additional qualification ( health visitor ). Newcome's leisure activities and hobbies include an interest in sports , particularly cricket , art history , film and cinema, and reading novels . His personal interest is also in his own physical fitness , especially mountain hiking and jogging . Newcome is also an avid squash player.
