Jan Valerián Jirsík (born June 19, 1798 in Kácov , † February 23, 1883 in Budweis ) was Bishop of Budweis.

Life

Jan Valerián Jirsík studied philosophy and theology in Königgrätz and Prague for his home diocese of Königgrätz . He was ordained a priest on December 28, 1820 and then worked as a chaplain in Cítov , Raudnitz , Železná Hora and later as a pastor in Minice . In 1836 he became a canon of the Prague cathedral chapter at St. Vitus .

Bishop of Budweis

After the death of Budweiser Bishop Joseph Andreas Lindauer , Franz Joseph I , who was entitled to the right of nomination in his capacity as Emperor of Austria, appointed Jan Valerián Jirsík as his successor on March 25, 1851.

The papal confirmation of September 5, 1851 by Pius IX. followed on October 19, 1851, the episcopal ordination in St. Vitus Cathedral by Archbishop Friedrich Joseph Prince von Schwarzenberg and on November 1, 1851 in Budweis the enthronement .

During his tenure, Vendelín Grünwald and his merits founded the Czech-language grammar school in Budweis. After his death he was buried in the cemetery of the Church of St. Prokop in Budweis.

In 1926, in gratitude for the support of the Czech school system, the city of Budweis erected a monument to Jan Valerián Jirsík near the Black Tower . The bronze statue was created by Josef Václav Myslbek .
