Jarosław "Jarek" Śmietana (born March 29, 1951 in Krakow ; † September 2, 2013 ibid) was a Polish jazz guitarist and band leader .

Career

Śmietana initially played the blues and graduated from the Katowice State Music Academy . In 1974 he played with Klaus Lenz on the Jazz Jamboree . Between 1975 and 1981 he directed the fusion band Extra Ball (with Andrzej Olejniczak sax and Wojciech Groborz p). From 1982 he was on the road with his own band Sounds , the big band Symphonic Sound Orchestra , which he led, and the all-star combo Polish Jazz Stars Band . He formed a quartet with Zbigniew Namysłowski and other musicians. He has toured internationally and at festivals with David Gilmore , Eddie Henderson (1994), John Abercrombie (1998), Gary Bartz (1999), Dave Friedman , Brad Terry and Nigel Kennedy (2009). He also recorded with Zbigniew Seifert ( Kilimanjaro , 1978), Art Farmer (1998) and John Purcell (2001) and wrote numerous jazz tracks.

At the beginning of September 2013, Śmietana died at the age of 62 from complications from a brain tumor .

Prizes and awards

For a long time since the 1970s he led the polls of the magazines Jazz Forum , Jazz , Gitara i Bass and Muzyk . In 1998 he won the Polish Fryderyk Music Prize with his album Songs and Other Ballads .

The Polish Post issued a special stamp in his honor in 2017.
