family

Jens Vilhelm Petersen was the son of the carpenter and fire chief Rasmus Petersen (1823–94) and Bolette, b. Jørgensen (1815-86). On January 9, 1887 , he married Marie Gottschalt, born in Odense. February 1, 1858 in Odense - died December 1, 1951 in Odense, daughter of master chimney sweep Carl Gottschalt (1821–70) and Marie Aagaard (1822–1915). In 1881 he moved to Odense and settled down there. His son, Knud Lehmann Petersen, also became an architect and even took over the post of royal building inspector from his father.

education

He passed the great preliminary examination, corresponding to the Abitur, at the high school 'Odense Katedralskole', did his carpentry apprenticeship with his father and worked there as a journeyman for several years while at the same time attending the technical school in Odense. He also drew for the architect Carl Lendorf. In October 1870 he began his studies at the Art Academy in Copenhagen , where he graduated in December 1875 . In 1881 he worked as a draftsman and site manager for the architect Hans J. Holm. From 1877 - 78 he made a year-long study trip to France, Italy and Germany at their own expense.

work life

Jens Vilhelm Petersen worked in Odense as a freelance architect from 1889 to 1929 and was also a civil servant, namely the 'royal building inspector' for Funen, Vejle Amt , the diocese of Ribe and parts of Sønderjylland. In 1879 he was one of the founders of the Academic Architects' Association. As a student of Hans J. Holm, he was initially quite involved in the historicist style. However, he followed the tendencies of the time and broke away somewhat from historicism. As a nice example of the different styles he built in are:

  • the Ane Margrethe Petersens Foundation - pure Italian renaissance
  • the railway post building in Odense - Danish-Italian renaissance
  • the Thomas Kingo Church - Danish Renaissance

Petersen's position as royal building inspector brought many tasks with it besides his private work. This work pressure at times led to less artistic quality.
