origin

The original form of the name is probably Jiska , a biblical figure ( Gen 11.29  EU ). The Hebrew name means "God looks (on)" or "God watches over you". The current form was popularized by a character in Shakespeare's comedy The Merchant of Venice .

distribution

The spread of the first name increased significantly in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s, it was one of the twenty most common first names in Germany. Since the end of the 1990s, the prevalence has fallen compared to the other first names.
