Jewel (singer)
Jewel Kilcher (born May 23, 1974 in Payson , Utah ), better known by her first name Jewel , is an American singer and actress who has sold more than 30 million records . She writes her own songs. You can find love songs as well as critical engagement with US society .
biography
Jewel is a granddaughter of the Swiss-American farmer and politician Yule Kilcher . She grew up in Alaska , where she began at an early age to accompany her parents to performances in Eskimo villages. After her parents divorced, she stayed with her father and continued to accompany him during performances. Seven years later she moved to Michigan and studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy . During this period she also began to write her first songs. After graduation, she moved to live with her mother in San Diego and did some part-time jobs. She was discovered by Atlantic Records while performing in a coffee shop . Jewel's father is of German-Swiss descent, her mother has Irish roots. Jewel himself has both US and Swiss citizenship. She is also a second aunt of actress Q'orianka Kilcher .
On August 7, 2008, Jewel married the US rodeo star Ty Murray , with whom she had been in a relationship for ten years, in the Bahamas. The two live together on a 890 acre farm in Stephenville, Texas. In 2011, Jewel gave birth to a son. It is the couple's first child. In February 2014, the couple announced their split.
Stylistic features of their music
Their opening albums often contain songs that have been produced with little effort (sometimes only with guitar accompaniment ).
She broke with this tradition on her 2003 album 03 04 . There is a dance video on the CD and she experiments with different musical styles ( dance , classical folk , jazz , beat , pop , techno , soul ), which was received negatively by some of the fans. Nevertheless, 03 04 reached number 2 on the US charts. On the album Goodbye Alice in Wonderland , released in 2006 , Jewel returned to her musical roots.

Some text passages from their songs
- The song Pieces of You raises the question of whether the ugly, bad or different that you see in other people is not also a part of yourself:
- “She's an ugly girl, is that why you want to kill her? It is not a threat. Do you hate it because it is part of you? "
- “You say he's gay . Is that why you want to hurt him? Are you afraid that you are one of them too? Do you hate him because he is part of you? "
- You can find religious aspects in her songs , for example in the song who will save your soul ( who will save your soul ).
- “Who will save your soul after all the lies you've told? We are so concerned about saving our souls that we forget to start ”.
- A success that is also known in Europe is intuition . She gives the following advice in this song:
- "Follow your heart, your intuition, it will lead you in the right direction" - follow your heart, your intuition, it will lead you in the right direction . It is their answer to the complications of everyday life today.
