Joachim Diederichs (art historian)

Joachim Diederichs (born October 7, 1945 in Jena ) is an Austrian art historian , cultural journalist and publisher .

Career

Joachim Diederichs comes from the family of the publisher Eugen Diederichs . In 1949 the family fled from Jena to Cologne. In 1958 he focused on the mediation of contemporary art. From 1961 to 1962, evening courses from Karl Marx on the art of the 20th century shaped him . From 1965 to 1967 he was an orchestra musician in the staff music corps Siegburg / Bonn. From 1967 he studied in Munich with Erich Hubala . The focus of his studies was the art of the baroque . He went on a study trip to seven museum cities in the USA and took part in the student congress on museum reform with Hugo Borger . In 1975 he completed his studies at the Ruhr University Bochum with Bernhard Kerber and Max Imdahl with a dissertation on the subject of happening and multimedia .

Professional career

In Cologne he worked on the museum catalog of the 20th century and the catalog of the Ludwig Cologne Collection as a fellow of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation . For the Kölnischer Kunstverein he developed a documentation for the exhibition Happening & Fluxus curated by Szeemann . At the Documenta 1975/77 in Kassel he worked a. a. for Manfred Schneckenburger as well as in the artist books sector , and he was responsible for the performances . He assisted Laurie Anderson , Marina Abramovic , Stuart Brisley , Joseph Beuys , Christo , Jochen Gerz and Nam June Paik .

In 1979 he initiated the founding of the Artothek in Vienna with three exhibitions, employed by Helmut Zilk . From 1980 to 1990 he was director of the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven and during this period curated 100 national exhibitions together with Mülheimer Freiheit , Rolf Julius , Franz Erhard Walther and Peter Weibel . He also organized the special program for the Society of Friends of Art for Wilhelmshaven. as well as the outdoor sculpture program of the art gallery and the symposium bootschaften .

In 1990 the family moved to Vienna. At the invitation of the Republic of Senegal, Diederichs visited numerous places where the artists worked, such as the studios of Amadou Kre M'Baye , El Hadji Sy and Amadou Sow . As a result, he was engaged to carry out the global traveling exhibition in German-speaking countries and presented works by 72 artists in Oldenburg, Bonn, Würzburg and Vienna. Then, on behalf of the Foreign Office under Dietrich Genscher, he brought “wall painting” as an exhibition presentation with five artists to the North-South dialogue in the Dakar National Gallery. He curated “People Without Mask” as an exhibition project on the image of man and caricature at Schloss Ottenstein / Nö with Manfred Deix , Valie Export , Adolf Frohner , Rudolf Hausner , Maria Lassnig , Friederike Pezold , Arnulf Rainer , Mario Terzic and Erwin Wurm .

Music and art

He was able to place the Arnold Schönberg memorial exhibition in Germany on behalf of the Schönberg Society . At the symposium at Schloss Lengenfeld, he examined “Sound as a medium of visual arts” “Audio Scene '79” on behalf of the Ministry of Science . He edited the complete edition of Josef Matthias Hauer with writings and new documents, published detailed studies and lectures. Since 1993 the publishing Lafite he gives composers of our time out, as Friedrich Cerha , HK Gruber , Dieter Kaufmann , Paul Kont , Gyorgy Ligeti , Anestis Logothetis , Kurt Schwertsik . He founded MUSIKZEIT talk for a dialogue with the public. He bundled the production series under the umbrella term MUSIKZEIT. Music fairs in Frankfurt , Cannes and Ried were used for multimedia marketing. Exhibitions with a cultural-political horizon were presented in Vienna and Alpbach . As a publisher, he edits documentaries on music in and from Vienna.
