Joseph Michael "Joe" Callahan (born December 20, 1982 in Brockton , Massachusetts ) is a retired American ice hockey player who played 46 games for the New York Islanders , San Jose Sharks and Florida between 2001 and 2013, among others Panthers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . However, Callahan spent most of his career in the American Hockey League , where he played nearly 600 games for a total of nine different teams.

Career

Callahan first played for Boston College High School in the 2000/01 season before he began studying at the renowned Yale University at the age of 18 . There he ran for the local ice hockey team in ECAC Hockey , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After his first college game year, in which he had scored eleven points , the American was selected in the third round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in 70th place by the Phoenix Coyotes . In the following two years Callahan continuously improved his offensive yield and signed his first professional contract in the organization of the Phoenix Coyotes after the 2003/04 college season. In total, the defender had played 94 games in the three years in the college team and scored 44 points.

By signing the contract with the Coyotes they brought him towards the end of the 2003/04 season in the squad of the Springfield Falcons , their farm team from the American Hockey League , where the defensive player prepared four goals in 13 games. Since Phoenix made a farm team change for the 2004/05 season , Callahan was subsequently used for the Utah Grizzlies . The rookie finished the first full professional year of his career with eleven points from 75 matches and a weak plus / minus balance of −35. In addition, the Grizzlies - like the Falcons in the previous year - missed qualification for the playoffs. The following off-season was characterized by another change of cooperation partner, whereby the American ran up for the San Antonio Rampage in the following two years until the summer of 2007 . The first year in San Antonio was sobering for Callahan as the team also missed the playoffs. He himself appeared even less aggressively, but was able to clearly improve his negative plus / minus statistics. He recorded an upward trend in the 2006/07 season , when he set new personal bests in terms of both his points and his plus / minus balance. Missing the playoffs again meant that the American's contract was not extended and he signed a one-year contract as a free agent with the Anaheim Ducks for the National Hockey League and American Hockey League . They used him in the 2007/08 game year exclusively in their AHL farm team, the Portland Pirates , where the defender played the best season of his career to date. At 24 he collected more points than ever before and for the first time had a positive plus / minus value. In the playoffs, the team failed only in the Eastern Conference final to the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins .

Callahan's increase in performance compared to previous years had also not gone unnoticed by the New York Islanders , who provided the free agent with a two-way contract for a period of one year in July 2008. First he started the season again in the AHL, where the Bridgeport Sound Tigers were the fifth station of the now 27-year-old. On December 9, 2008 Callahan was appointed to the NHL roster of the Islanders, who were one of the weakest teams in the league at the time. There he made his debut on the same day in a 3-4 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers . During the season he was brought into the squad six more times and came to a total of 18 appearances in the NHL and 56 in the AHL for the Sound Tigers. He was able to prepare two goals for the Islanders and was involved in 13 goals Bridgeport, of which he scored four himself. After his contract expired, the San Jose Sharks signed him on July 16, 2009 for one year.

Due to injury, the defender played less than half of all season games of the AHL farm team Worcester Sharks during the 2009/10 season . In the summer of 2010 Callahan was again available as a free agent and in August 2010 agreed on a one-year employment relationship with the Florida Panthers , in which the American received significantly more NHL Ice Age than before in San José. However, this did not prevent the defensive player from becoming available again as a free player on the market a year later. In October 2011, the Canadiens de Montréal finally secured his services and then ordered Callahan to join the Hamilton Bulldogs farm team . There he spent another season in the AHL, as well as the following with the Abbotsford Heat . In the summer of 2013, at the age of 31, he announced the end of his active career.
