Johann August Eckenbrecher , von Eckenbrecher since 1787 (born October 7, 1743 in Berlin ; † November 8, 1822 in Gutenpaaren ) was a Prussian major general , commander of the mounted artillery and since June 15, 1804, master of Gutenpaaren.

Life

His parents were the Berlin citizen and wine merchant Johann August Eckenbrecher and his wife Sophie Luise Dreyer.

Military career

He joined the field artillery corps as a bombardier in 1760 and took part in the siege of Schweidnitz and the battle near Burkersdorf during the Seven Years' War . During the war on January 19, 1762 he was promoted to second lieutenant.

After the war he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on September 29, 1777 and took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 , where he distinguished himself in the battle near Weißkirch. On April 19, 1782 he was staff captain and on July 22, 1787 captain and company commander in the 3rd Artillery Regiment .

During the campaign in Holland he received the order Pour le Mérite for the bombardment of the fortress Gorkum near Gorinchem on September 17, 1787 . The fortress started to burn after just five shots, and after 44 shots four columns of smoke were counted, so that the commandant Alexander Philip van der Capellen (1745–1787) surrendered. During the occupation of the fortress, the Prussians found supplies of all kinds.

For his services he was raised to the nobility on September 24, 1787 . On June 7, 1795 he rose to major and was from 1796 to 1800 in the observation army in Westphalia . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 7, 1797 and was appointed commander of the 1st artillery regiment on May 7, 1801 . On October 8, 1804 he was then commander of the mounted artillery and rose to colonel at the end of May 1805 . In the War of the Fourth Coalition he acquired in the Battle of Eylau the Order of Saint Stanislaus First Class. After the war he was dismissed as major general on May 7, 1809 with a pension of 600 thalers, but the pension was initially only paid in half, as with others. He died on November 8, 1822.

At the end of the 18th century, Eckenbrecher was a member of the Masonic lodge "Zum Goldenen Schiff" together with twelve other artillerymen .

In an assessment from 1802, Major General von Merkatz wrote : “Is a very good staff officer and commander. He is keen on punctuality and has good practical artillery skills. His moral character is impeccable. "
