Johann Ludwig Markhoff

Johann Ludwig Markhoff (born January 25, 1761 in Berlin , † November 14, 1831 in Kroischwitz near Schweidnitz ) was a Prussian major general and most recently inspector of the 2nd engineer inspection.

His parents were the master blacksmith and armorer Joachim Friedrich Markhoff (* 1718; † July 30, 1792) and his wife Sophie Charlotte, née Peters (* August 12, 1731; † September 16, 1791).

Life

Markhoff joined the engineering corps of the Prussian Army and took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . On April 18, 1780 he was transferred to the engineering corps in Cosel as a conductor . On January 5, 1786 he was promoted to second lieutenant and came to the engineer corps in Wesel . In 1787 Markhoff took part in the campaign in Holland , where he distinguished himself at the siege of Vianen . In the First Coalition War he was able to distinguish himself again on November 9, 1794 in the battle at the Schiffsbrücke near Wesel and received the order Pour le Mérite on December 3, 1794 . On December 31, 1796 he was appointed staff captain and on January 25, 1797 engineer from the place in Wesel. He became captain on February 14, 1802 , before coming to Hameln as an engineer officer on March 11, 1806 in the run-up to the Fourth Coalition War . The fortress Hameln arose at the beginning of the war.

After the war, Markhoff was initially placed on half pay on October 4, 1807 , before he was transferred to Spandau as an engineer on November 30, 1808 at Gneisenau's suggestion . In 1810 he worked on the reorganization of the engineering corps. On August 20, 1811, he was appointed major, and on March 16, 1812, he was appointed commander of the engineers and pioneers in the Prussian mobile army corps. The corps then fought in the campaign of 1812 in the battles near Melothen, Eckau and Graefenthal. In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation , Markhoff joined General von Yorck's staff on March 10, 1813 . During the war he fought in the battles near Freyburg an der Unstrut, Eisenach, Vitry, Chalons, Chateau-Thierry , Montmirail Fère-Champenoise St. Dizier as well as the battles near Laon and Paris . For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd class on January 11, 1815 .

After the war Markhoff was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 30, 1816 and on March 27, 1816 appointed brigadier of the fortresses in Silesia. At the same time, he also acted as a brigadier of the 2nd Engineer Brigade from April 20, 1816. On July 2, 1816, he came as an engineer officer to the staff of General von Zieten in the Mobilien Army Corps in France. On March 20, 1818, he was promoted to Colonel with Patent from August 14, 1818 and appointed inspector of the 2nd Engineer Inspection. After the troops had withdrawn, on April 19, 1819, he was given permission to wear the French Military Merit Order . On June 13, 1825 Mark Hoff received his farewell as a major general with pension and the Service Cross . He died on November 14, 1831 in Kroischwitz near Schweidnitz.
