Joseph Pace (born November 18, 1959 in Morbegno ) is an Italian painter and sculptor .  

Live and act

Joseph Pace was born in Morbegno ( Lombardy , Italy) and grew up in Zaire ( Africa ), where his father Aurelio Pace, a historian of African history, worked for UNESCO with the writer Jacques Garelli . As the grandson of the Protestant pastor Camillo Pace , Joseph Pace was introduced to painting and sculpture by his mother Franchina Cardile and his uncle Antonio Cardile - an artist from the Roman school of painting. Pace has participated in legal, literary, social and psychoanalytic studies at the La Sorbonne University in Paris and at the La Sapienza and Roma Tre Universities in Rome .

In the 1980s Pace worked in Rome and Paris, where he founded “Le Filtranisme” - a neo-existentialist , artistic, philosophical movement - in the mid-1980s . “Le Filtranisme” is optically close to the Renaissance and has an anthropo-cosmic vision.

Inspired by a variety of sources such as For example, fashion , history , philosophy , electronic music, and contemporary art , Pace uses a variety of techniques (e.g. painting , assemblage , sculpture , electronic engraving ) inspired by the iconography of mass society , philosophy, and psychoanalysis .

By putting together different objects such as B. vintage - fashion jewelry or recycled materials such as wood , metals or glass shelves of refrigerators, the artist combined with mono- and polychromatic colors that it converts into arabesque paintings.

Joseph Pace's imaging work shows an artistic and intellectual path with which the artist reinterprets our psychological realities . In July 1987, Pace wrote the first "Filtraniste" manifesto . In the same year he became friends with the multimedia Brazilian artist Sergio Valle Duarte and, because of their shared African experiences, with the Belgian writer Albert Russo. In February 1988, Pace organized the exhibition “Paysages Filtranistes” at the Hulot Gallery in Paris, an exhibition of paintings and poems that summarized the current state of abstract dogmatism . The meeting in the summer of 1990 with the sociologist Kurt Heinrich Wolff is significant with regard to epistemological "surrender-and-catch" concepts. This encounter influenced Pace's artistic work from figurative painting to abstract expressionism . A few years later, Pace became the greatest exponent of “informalismo Filtranista”. A few months earlier, in January 1990, in his home in Rome, he signed the declaration of the now enlarged group of Filtranists. From 1996 to 2008 he was appointed Assistant Professor of the Sociology of Knowledge and Art and the History of Sociology at La Sapienza University in Rome.

After the figurative period (1977–1990) followed the abstract period (from 1990), which was first characterized by the “Periodo dei Legni” (Period of Woods, 1990–1996) and which included the “Factor C” studies (1997) , the series "IDM" (Inflexibility of Memory, from 2000) and "ATONS" (dedicated to techno and electronic music, from 2005), which are still in progress, followed. With a partial return to figurative art, Pace is currently working on “ENGRAVING” (graphic art processed on the computer) and “MIDAS” (large montage sculptures made from antique costume jewelry).
