The Altstadt-Nord district is part of the city center district of Cologne .

location

The Altstadt-Nord district together with the Altstadt-Süd form the center of the city. Both parts of the city are bounded by the Cologne Rings , which surround the medieval city area in a semicircle, towards the Neustadt. The Rhine in the east limits the area to Deutz . The east-west axis Cäcilienstraße - Neumarkt - Hahnenstraße represents the borderline between the two parts of the old town.

history

View of the old town of Cologne

Politically, both parts of the old town belong to the city center district . In current parlance, “Old Town” is often only understood to mean the district around Groß St. Martin . However, this quarter was the port area in Roman times and therefore not the oldest settlement area in the city.

The Altstadt-Nord district is considered to be the nucleus of the city; it existed as a settlement before the year 50, when the city was elevated to Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium .

In the middle of the district is the cathedral , the symbol of the city of Cologne , which is a world cultural heritage site . There are also other sights such as the town hall , numerous museums, the armory , Romanesque churches and many historic town houses. Some of these are reconstructions built after the Second World War , such as the headquarters from 4711 in Glockengasse  4.

In the north of the district on the street of the same name was the " Klingelpütz " prison, which was completed in 1838 and where the central execution site for the special courts of the Rhineland was located during the Nazi era . It is estimated that over 1000 people sentenced to death by the Reichsgericht and Volksgerichtshof died under the guillotine . After the construction of the Cologne JVA in Ossendorf , the 130-year-old prison was blown up and the rubble was pushed together to form a hill. The Klingelpützpark is located on the site today . Another epitome of the NS reign of terror was the Gestapo headquarters in the so-called EL-DE house at Appellhofplatz 23-25 / corner of Elisenstraße. The NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne has been there since 1988 . Directly opposite it is the justice building on Appellhofplatz , which - completed in 1893 as the successor to the Rhenish Court of Appeal - is the oldest and most traditional courthouse in the city. The "Appellhof" is now the seat of the Cologne Administrative Court and the Cologne Finance Court .

Infrastructure and economy

traffic

The Cologne Central Station is the main hub of rail transport of the city and one of the most important in Germany. The district is accessed by a number of light rail and underground lines and bus lines. Since 1974 the district has been cut through by the six-lane north-south drive . The Cologne Rings with their squares ( Friesenplatz and Ebertplatz ) are important for traffic management , from which arterial roads such as Venloer Straße and Neusser Straße open up the districts.

Business world

The two most heavily frequented “shopping streets” in Germany in recent years are in the north of the old town: Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse .

The 680 meter long Hohe Straße is a pedestrian zone from Wallrafplatz in the north that runs through a large part of the old town north to Sternengasse , where it merges into the Hohe Pforte street . About 300 meters beforehand, Schildergasse branches off to the west, which also runs as a pedestrian zone to Neumarkt . According to a count at the end of March 2014, Schildergasse and Hohe Straße were the two most frequented shopping streets in Germany with 14,590 and 12,795 passers-by, respectively .
