Kala is the second studio album by the Tamil- British singer Mathangi Arulpragasam alias MIA. The album is named after her mother and was released in August 2007 on the XL Recordings label. At Kala , MIA combines hip-hop and electronic dance music with influences from world music .

Kala received almost exclusively very positive reviews. In the New Musical Express it is described by Alex Miller as a "bewildering three dimensional picture of the 21st century and a triumph for its revolutionary creator" (German: "A confusing three-dimensional image of the 21st century and a triumph for its revolutionary creator" ) .

The Single Paper Planes was nominated for a Grammy in 2009 in the Record of the Year category. The song was used in the Oscar-winning soundtrack to the film Slumdog Millionaire ; both in the album version and in the DFA remix . Also coming Paper Planes in the video game Far Cry 3 is used. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 236 of the 500 best songs of all time and number 5 of the 100 best songs of the 2000s. Pitchfork Media placed Paper Planes (Diplo Remix) at No. 3 of the 500 best songs of the decade. The New Musical Express ranks him fourth in the 100 best songs of the 2000s.

The album Kala appears in numerous 2007 annual lists, including a third place on Pitchfork Media , a fourth place in The Guardian and a seventh place in the NME .

Rolling Stone magazine named Kala # 9 of the 100 best albums of the 2000s and # 393 of the 500 best albums of all time . In the New Musical Express selection of the 500 best albums of all time, it ranks 184th. Pitchfork Media ranks Kala 22nd of the 200 best albums of the decade.

The album's metascore is 87 out of 100 possible points.

The album received gold status in the US and silver in the UK. The Single Paper Planes received triple platinum in the US.
