The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. Its communes come from the former cantons of Brezolles (all 18 communes), Châteauneuf-en-Thymerais (all 14 communes), Senonches (all 8 communes) and La Ferté-Vidame ( all 7 municipalities).

The canton is located in the northwest of the Eure-et-Loir department and borders on Normandy.
