Karken Church

history

Some Stone Age and numerous Iron Age finds, especially grave finds, suggest that people were already present in the area in prehistoric times.

The von Kerreke gentlemen are documented towards the end of the 12th century. A Giselbertus von Kerreke took part in the coronation of Otto IV of Braunschweig as Roman-German king in 1198 . In 1317, Cäcilie von Kerreke finally sold her Karken property, including the jurisdiction, to the von Heinsberg family .

In 1591, Spanish troops carried out a massacre on the local residents who had fled to the parish church. A cross on the von Karker mill reminds us of this today .

The former Karken office, to which Kempen and Kirchhoven also belonged, was dissolved with the municipal reorganization that took effect on January 1, 1972 and added to the city of Heinsberg.

Chapel crucible

religion

When it was raised to the status of an independent parish in 1559, St. Severinus , Bishop of Cologne , was elected parish patron of Karken. According to an old custom, October 23 is the name day of the parish of St. Severinus Karken.

Stiegel Chapel : The small prayer and processional chapel is located in the Stiegel district at the intersection of Hirtstrasse, Prunkstrasse and Schierenkreuz. The “ Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows ” already existed here at the beginning of the 19th century . The builders of the plastered brick building were the couple Frenken and Leonard. The chapel, which was still in the open at the time, is also shown on the topographic map of the official Prussian new recording from 1893. In 1927, in a report in the Heinsberger Volkszeitung, there was talk of a "Mother of God chapel at a crossroads in the open air". There were originally two linden trees on both sides of the building, but they had to be felled during the last renovation in 2005. With the help of the neighborhood , the chapel was extensively renovated this year and inaugurated on August 29, 2006 by Pastor Marian Janke.

The Stiegel chapel has a rectangular floor plan, was built from clinker bricks and is closed off by a saddle roof. A double-winged entrance door with a crucifix above it forms the entrance. Inside there is an altar , a Pietà , several figures of saints and a few prayer benches. Three wooden figures represent Saint Brigida , Saint Roch and Saint Anthony of Padua and, like the Stations of the Cross, come from the first half of the 20th century. A plaque in the interior bears the slogan: PRESS YOURSELF TO THE MOTHER OF GOD AND CLAIM FOR IT SO SHE WILL HELP YOU.
