Karl Heinrich Adelbert Lipsius (born January 19, 1805 in Großhennersdorf , † July 2, 1861 in Leipzig ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian and educator .

Life

Lipsius comes from a family of theologians. He was born in 1805 as the youngest son of the pastor of Bernstadt Adolf Gottfried Wilhelm Lipsius (born November 13, 1768, † May 6, 1841 in Bernstadt auf dem Eigen ) and his wife, the teacher Magdalena Elisabeth Lipsius (née Garve, born October 26 1773 - December 25, 1849 in Leipzig), born in Großhennersdorf in Upper Lusatia. His older brother is the pastor Gustav Hermann Julius Lipsius (1802–1841). Until 1820 he was tutored by his father. From 1820 to 1823 he attended the old grammar school in Zittau.

After graduating from high school, he studied Protestant theology , classical philology , philosophy and oriental studies at the University of Leipzig . He then obtained a Liberalium Artium Magister and a doctorate in Dr. phil. From 1826 to 1827 he worked as a teacher at the Thomas School in Leipzig. He then completed his habilitation at the Philosophical Faculty of Leipzig University with the writing: De modorum usu in novo Testamento quaestiones grammaticae, pars prima indicativi usum explicans .

In 1827 he became vice principal at the Rutheneum grammar school in Gera. Finally, in 1829, he was recalled by the Leipzig City Council. From 1829 to 1831 he worked as a private lecturer in theology at Leipzig University. From 1831/32 he was again a religion teacher at the Thomas School and gave lessons in Hebrew and philology . In 1847 he took over the post of vice principal. In 1861 he succeeded Rector Johann Gottfried Stallbaum .

He was also a member of the Historical-Theological Society in Leipzig since 1832 and a corresponding member of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences in Görlitz (OLGdW) since 1837 . In 1848 he was unanimously elected chairman of the Saxon high school teacher assemblies in Leipzig and Meißen. He had a close friendship with the poet Friedrich Rückert throughout his life .

Lipsius died in Leipzig in 1861 and was buried in the old Johannisfriedhof . The mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius gave the funeral speech.

Lipsius was married twice. His first marriage was on May 30, 1828 with Molly Rost (born September 11, 1805, † July 21, 1842 in Leipzig). There were six children from the marriage, two of whom died young. He concluded his second marriage on April 26, 1852 with Lina Wohlfarth (born March 15, 1820 in Plauen), the marriage remained childless. From the children we know:
