Friedrich Wilhelm Ehrenfried Rost (born April 11, 1768 in Budissin (today Bautzen ), † February 12, 1835 in Leipzig ) was a German teacher , philosopher and poet . He was the rector of the Thomas School in Leipzig .

Life

The son of the philologist Christoph Jeremias Rost attended the grammar school in Bautzen, where his father was the principal. He then studied philology , history , philosophy and theology at the University of Leipzig from 1787 to 1792 . In 1792 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. and obtained his master's degree in 1794 .

Afterwards he acted as private tutor to Hofrat Friedrich August Wilhelm Wenck . Later he was the first volunteer teacher at the Leipzig Ratsfreischule and at the same time Vespers preacher at the St. Pauli University Church . In 1794 he took over the post of rector of the grammar school in Plauen. In 1796 he became vice principal at the Thomas School in Leipzig. In 1800 he was promoted to rector and held this office until his death. He carried out reforms, so he introduced the widow's treasury for teachers and in 1820 founded the Saxony Foundation in Franzensbrunnen. Rost donated the Bach oil painting by Elias Gottlob Haußmann (1695–1774) from 1746 to the school.

He completed his habilitation in philosophy in 1804 and was a private lecturer from 1804 to 1809 . In 1809 he became an associate professor of philosophy at Leipzig University. He was a colleague of the University's Small and Large Princely College . Rost wrote several poems and in 1802 became poëta laureatus of the University of Wittenberg . In 1826 he became a member of the Upper Lusatian Society of Sciences (OLGdW). He was also a member of the Latin Society in Jena and the Historical-Theological Society in Leipzig.

He married his daughters Juliane Molly and Mariane Fanny to the Lipsius brothers Karl Heinrich Adelbert Lipsius (theologian and rector of the Thomas School) and Gustav Hermann Julius Lipsius (theologian and pastor in Bernstadt).
