Karl Dietl , from 1870 Ritter von Dietl (born April 14, 1813 in Salzburg , † March 4, 1885 in Munich ), was a Bavarian lieutenant general and commander of the 4th division .

Life

He was the son of the Bavarian regimental quartermaster in the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Crown Prince" Fanz Xaver Dietl and his wife Franziska, née Rensch.

Military career

Dietl entered the cadet corps as a pupil in 1824 and was accepted into the 5th Infantry Regiment of the Bavarian Army as a Junker on August 11, 1831 . On January 1, 1832 he was promoted to lieutenant and on June 6, 1832 transferred to the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" . In 1837/38 Dietl was an inspection officer in the cadet corps. After being promoted to first lieutenant on October 25, 1842, he was appointed regimental adjutant on June 4, 1843 . On August 24, 1848 he was promoted to captain II class and on December 23, 1849 to captain I class . Since June 22, 1857 Major and since October 22, 1861 Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Infantry Regiment, Dietl, who had already received the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael on November 25, 1863 , became on March 31, 1866 promoted to colonel .

With the 2nd Infantry Regiment he fought in the war against Prussia in 1866, among others in the battles of Rüdlingen (July 10th), Helmstadt and Üttingen (July 25th). In the army order of August 20, 1866, Dietl was praised by name for his brave behavior during the fighting and, in the order of September 20, 1866, was awarded the Knight's Cross of the First Class of the Military Order of Merit.

On January 8, 1869, he was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade . As such, he took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . He fought in the battles of Wörth (August 6, 1870), Beaumont (August 30, 1870), Sedan (September 1, 1870), Orléans (October 11, 1870), Coulmiers (November 9, 1870), Orléans (4. December 1870) and Beaugency (December 8, 1870). With an army order of August 30, 1870 Dietl was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Military Order of Merit on August 6 for his participation in the Battle of Wörth and the Iron Cross II class for the victorious battles near Sedan on September 1 . A chapter of the Military Max Joseph Order held in Orléans on November 8, 1870, chaired by General der Infanterie Ludwig von der Tann-Rathsamhausen , voted unanimously for Dietl to be accepted into the Order. By army order of December 22, 1870, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of this order for his brave behavior in the Battle of Sedan through the storming and successful occupation of the village of Balau on September 1, 1870 . With the award the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself Ritter von Dietl after the entry in the nobility register .

On January 18, 1871, he was given the interim command of the 1st Infantry Division as well as the permission to accept and wear the Iron Cross 1st Class and on January 8, 1872 that for the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Military Cross of Merit . On April 24, 1873 he was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed commander of the 4th division. Karl Ritter von Dietl died on March 4, 1885, at the age of 71 in Munich. He was buried in the old south cemetery in Munich .
